Patched bullet in 20 ga. slug gun
« on: September 12, 2004, 02:27:09 AM »
Is it possible to "patch up" a 58 cal. minie ball to use as a slug in a 20 ga. NEF Tracker II? I believe the twist rate is 1 in 34", so a longer slug like this should work well, shouldn't it? Some recent articles in Handloader magazine have gotten me interested in shooting full-diameter slugs with no plastic sabot. Has anyone tried something like this?

I have not done what you are trying to do, but the math should tell you what you can do.  If you slug the barrel and measure the bore and the groove diamiters you should be able to work it out.  will the minie ball fall free through the barrel or will it be etched by the lands of the fifling?  If the Minie ball falls freely through the barrel it could still work if the skirt of the bullet opens enough obgurate to grip the rifling?    JB

Assuming the .58 mini is .580 and that 20ga is .625 that leaves .040 or .020 on each side.  (I'm assuming groove diameter fully rifled.)

I have successfully patched the way-to-small Lyman 12 ga slug to fit cylinder bore.  It took MANY layers of paper.  But , with smooth bore it worked well.  Patch kept with slug all the way.

Will it work?  Try it.  Let us know.

I've done it enought to fire a few rounds but never got around to shooting groups. I eventually got bored wrapping that much paper around it when I discovered that they work pretty well using regular shotcups as a sabot. You may have to size to about .565 for a good fit if you do that.

I tried it a while back with a regular 20 ga shot wad and black powder in a smoothbore. Using Pyrodex, it would hit a trash can at 75 yards.
Wrapping or rolling the bullet with paper helps quite a bit, and I imagine that a rifled barrel would be much better.

The tracker is rifled. I was shooting an Ultra Slug Hunter in a rifle frame. Pretty fun, but it takes a lot of lead casting the bullets (.620) but still shoot miniball in shotcups.

Crosscut,
I've made up 20ga. loads with .54 cal Maxi-balls seated in Win. AA wads. The maxi-ball weighed 430 Grains. I used old style AA cases and 28grs. of unique and a fold crimp. They shot really well but kicked like a mule. I got 2" groups at 50yds from a skeet bbl (smoothbore).

Dave,
That load sounds pretty hot in a shotgun. I use less than half that quantity of Unique in my 44 mag. Marlin. Are you sure about the 29 grains?

Crosscut,
I'm positive I used 28 Grs of Unique in that load. I got the load from a manual listing heavy field loads for a 20 ga. 1oz shot load.  Trying to compare the expansion ratio of a shotgun to your .44 is apples to oranges.. I use 9.0 grs of unique in my walkin around load for the .44 Mag. The way a powder performs is not linear accross the board when the size of the case and the bore of a 20ga. is so much greater than your .44. Also this was a skeet barrel with only .003 choke and a smooth bore. That led me to use the load listed for shot when using the Maxi-Ball. Because of the minimal constriction, the set back of the shot could actually make it a tighter fit than the slug.

MAX LOAD LISTED FOR 20 GAUGE AND UNIQUE IS 18 GRAINS WITH A 1 OUNCE LOAD!  29 grains is way over the limit and dangerous.
