savage 340v question
« on: January 03, 2005, 12:50:55 PM »
Looking to change 225win to a friendlier caliber possibly 243. I am wondering about what it should cost to get a new chamber/barrel made since there are none that I can find. Any help is appreciated!!! I would like to have at least a little knowledge when I go into the gunsmith shop.

Thanks,
Dave

Don't know if .243 pressure is a good idea for that action.  Believe it was originally chambered in 30-30 and small base .22 centerfires.

Custom barrel job would probably cost more than the price of a new gun.  Several hundred I'd guess.

wouldnt a 30-30 build a relatively close pressure to a 243.  But anyway having a barrel built to fit the action would cost a couple hundred???  I could also go with a 223 I guess, but I was just thinking about multiple uses.  Thank you for the reply.

Thank you,
Dave

The rifle was chambered in 225 and that's a close ballistic cousin to the 22-250..but at a lowered pressure.  I've heard that Savage had problems with the 340 in 225 so I would guess that was more pressure than the action wanted..  The 30-30 operates at significantly lower pressure levels than does the 243..  You won't likely get a barrel installed for $200.. at leaast not a quality one.. Even the Adams&Bennet barrels from Midway cost over a hundred plus the installation fee....   You might check with GunPartsCorp for a replacement barrel..  They may have a replacement available at a lower price..  but not likely a 243..

I have seen replacement barrels in .223, and .30-30 for these rifles, and they were cheep, but can't remember were. We have 2 of these rifles in .30-30 and like them very much, but there is no way I would stand behind one firing a .243. They were never intended to handle that much push.

Did a quick search on Gun Parts

http://www.gunpartscorp.com/

They offer barrels for various versions of the 340.  .223 is around $65, but you may need to change out the bolt head (they show out of stock). Complete bolt is about $80.  I'm not familiar enough with this model to be sure exactly what you need.  Magazines are listed at $31 each.

Still a pretty expensive proposition when you add labor.  Cheaper to take up reloading.  The .225 is a good cartridge.  Unfortunately, by the time Winchester introduced it, the 22-250 had caught on big time.

Check cartridge head size, then you might consider .300 Savage, good factory ammo still available. Might check magazine also to see what will feed properly. Quite a few of these guns were chambered in .300 Savage. Runs a couple hundred feet per second behind .308. With Win. 150 gr Silvertips, does neat things to whitetail.

Be very careful...I find no reference at all to the 340 ever being chambered in 300 Savage.  The M99 and the SuperSporter(M20 I think) but not the 340!!!

Savage Model 340

The Savage model 340 was chambered in 22 hornet, 222rem, 223rem, 224win and 30-30. Numrich gun parts has most if not all the parts needed for the model 340 in all it's series, including barrels.
