45 ACP Reloaders... (Part 2)
« on: January 21, 2005, 07:53:48 AM »
...powder-wise, I like Alliant's Unique for my 45.  I've found it burns quite clean, cooler than others I've tried (such as Bullseye, can't recall if I've used Blue Dot before), and seems to be accurate enough for me.  I want to ask what many of you other reloaders have found to be the best powder in your 45s, and perhaps what the best all-around powder for 45 target and plinking loads might be.  Thanks again for any input. :D

BTW, I've found that Unique burns cleaner thant Bullseye, at least in my experience.  After a hundred rounds or so w/ B.E., the muzzle is sooted pretty good.  Whereas w/ Unique, after a couple of hundred rounds or so, the muzzle is not nearly as dirty as a hundred with B.E.  Kind of strange to me, as it seems to prove that faster burning powders don't always add up to cleaner burning.  Same thing when I tried Unique in my 454 using 45 Colts; much cleaner around the cylinder and chambers than B.E. :?

Hmmmmmm.......Maybe I ought to try a pound of that stuff.  Seems quite unanimous here so far.  Does it burn near the "clean" side?   How 'bout the accuracy with something like a 230gr. Plated RN? :grin:

For target and plinking;

I've found that Winchester Super Target to be very good and clean, also it has good loading denisity. Very fluffy, meters very, very good and if you double charge it, you will notice it.  A pound of WST goes a looong way.  :shock:

I wanted to use Unique but it would not meter well for me.  I had some AA5 on the shelf so that's what I went with.

231 is cleaner than what-ever Winchester uses in their "U.S.A" ammo.  I've tried unique, Bullseye and 231 in 45 acp.  231, hands down, all situations, lead or jacketed, plinking, target and "don't-mess-with-me-or-mine" loads.  That's only in one pistol so it could be a fluke.

I like to use the WST and Bullseye in my accurate slow cast loads and AA#5, WAP, or Power Pistol for the faster jkt and cast loads. Unique seems to work in about any load.
