With all the available bullets in 224 diameter, Which bullet shoots best in the Handi Rifle 223. I had fair luck before my last 223 was stolen with Sierra 50 Grain sp.

all i shoot are the Nosler 55gr BTs and the Hornady 55gr V max.

i shot lots of other bullets but these two are the best

cheap ones or the Win. varmint 45's they are great

Thanks Gentlemen. I like the Amax and BT's Both. I just got the scope on the new Ultra. Today we are getting a blizzard up here in ND. I got a couple boxes of the cheap wincherter 45 grain HP'S to sight it in with.

I've tried a good assortment of factory ammo and some handloads in my Ultra but none so far has beat the 45 grain Winchester White box ammo at Wally World.... :roll:

Finally.... After approximatel 250 rounds of handloads I have found a load that equals the WW 45 JHP stuff. It is WW brass, CCI 400 primer, W748 powder, 27.0 grains behind a 52 grain Sierra matchking BTHP. Wheeeee. What an ordeal.... but it sure was fun. I seem to have hit a sweet spot in my barrel with this load. It shoots 3/8" to 5/8" at 100 yds for 5 shots in my 223 UV. But... drop down 0.2 grains and it opens up to almost 2 inches. Go over by 0.2 grains and it opens up to 1.6 inches. Now... lets see..... what can I do to the fore arm beding that will change this. Naturally I have the o-ring on the fore arm lug, plus epoxy bedding from the fore arm lug back to the breech, ahla Fred, but no foam, and a shim on the barrel latch, and steel epoxy on the frame where the barrel beds. Next operation for this baby is a trigger job. It is only about 4 lbs but must be the heaviest 4 lbs on earth. Onward to the next faze of this ongoing project to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

I keep hearing of people having much success with that powder...I'm going to have to try some of that myself....congratulations! Funny how the sweet load comes together in a small little bracket!! 27 grains...not plus or minus .5...

I kid you not. Not only is it 0.5 grains difference but actually is 0.2 grains. Could not believe it till I tried it twice. Same results. 27.0 is the sweet spot on my barrel. I know from reading on the benchrest site that there are what they call "nodes" in the loading. I loaded up to 27.6 and it looked like maybe another might be coming in at about 28.0 or there abouts. Next trip to the range will find out. Then I will start playing with the seating depth on the bullets. See if that has any improvement on the groups. :-) Plus this is the first time I have tried Winchester powder. I have always been a Hodgen fan, that and IMR. It looks the same as the H335 and H322 and H380 and H414, but something is for sure different, at leat in my rifle.

I've tried that same load in mine. My results were different I had to use 27.3 to 27.5 to get a 5/8" 100yd group. I found seating depth best results bullet even with bottom of case neck. same case wsr,primers ww748 topped with the Sierra 53 gr match king. But the best is A Barnes X bullet with everything else the same 50gr. all touching made Jw jealous his handi wouldn't shoot either load under 1.5" all are different but similar.
