Usually the cold weather woes associated with autoloaders have more to do with greases and oils solidifying and causing problems rather than the design of the shotgun.
I have both an 1100 and Auto 5, never had a problem. Also used my Benelli Nova (pump) in -5 temps without a problem. Replace the grease with a dry lube - several are out there.
However, my choice would be a Benelli SBE II. Tell your friend to save his pennies and spend a little extra. Still have 2 months left on my layaway at Sheels, eagerly awaiting next fall's waterfowl season!
