With a little help from a friend, I have finally slugged the bore of my 45-70, the groove diameter is .4564 and the bore is .452

That small of 45-70 bore  you should be able to use 45 colt cast bullets
 real good! You might look in to it, Just my 2 cents. Marv.

marv, I tend to be a "no great pains" reloader so the experiment that I ran using a Lee 250 grian bullet for the Colt (drops .454) wrapped in teflon tape didn't last too long thought he bullet shot good. Makes me think it might be possible to cast, lube and shoot 'em.  Problem is if it don't work I'll be in for an evening of deleading the barrel. Does seems that a swift kick of 3031 or 4198 would do the trick though don't it.

I did my BC Last weekend and the groove diameter was .4585, don't remember what the bore was it's written down somewhere.  
 
Is there an explanation for the large variation in these barrels? I have heard of some at .459, some much smaller. Is this just the variation you get from cost -effective (cheap) production?
