Somebody please remind me next year!
« on: January 31, 2003, 03:55:50 PM »
So I use alot of drags;  most of which have 10 too 15 feet of chain.  I still have a couple of drags I got from a guy years ago which he rigged with 6 feet of twin loop.  You guys need to remind me not to use those DANG things again, obviously I haven't learned my lesson...

I snagged one by the rear foot yesterday and the dirty, low down, flea bitten, son of a juniper berry eaten female musta carried the dang grapple in his mouth three hundred yards past four rows of perfectly good junipers, through a cholla flat and across the head of an arroyo before he dropped it and hung up in the main gowth and basalt.  Man I hate it when that happens.  A perfectly good drag line for the first, oh 25 yards and then, nothing!  That rotten misserable cast off of a mangy dog cost me an hour...shoulda shot him in the foot and let him to die slow!

I just know that the OLD ONE, Newt, ASA, T-man or one of you was rollin on the floor watchin me come back to the start and follow the drag mark to the end and nothin.

Thats the third "challenge" this year the other two went over froozen ground one half way up a boulder stroone slope and into a cave...thank god the grapple was out side.  That was fun too...holdin on to the slope with both feet and my bung hole, pullin the chain with one hand the pistol cocked and ready in the other.  Did I mention that I've cut lion tracks three times this year...once to a set!

Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes he gets you!

Asa,. got one of those trap twistin Toms yesterday...tore up half of the ranch till he got cross wise in a narrow Arroya..weighed in at 26lbs not the biggest but he was nasty.  I need some replacement pans for #3 monty dogless got any ideas?  I just new I was gonna find an old dog coyote at the end of the drag (took him in a trail set).

I do like your Cat Call lure,  and so do our cats...been turnin she cats loose for the last three weeks!    I've been using it on the side with mildly tainted Burro for bait and a bit of Tom Cat Gland lure... cats, fox and Badgers keep comin.  I've been fiddlin around with a number of different "sweet" type cat lures for the past few years, none has performed as well as yours.

I quit using drags one year after (1) had a coon took one way up into a cottonwood and I had a hell of time getting him down, and same season (2) had another coon pull one through a fencerow and across a disced field into a not-so-happy farmer's land that I didn't have permission on. Had to do some fancy fast talking to get my coon and equipment back...because he was the lucky finder of my catch while he was out checking electric fencing.
I saved one small coon drag out of all that aftermath. I put it in the end of the telescoping handle of an old aluminum dipnet. Used a bolt through the handle and through the drag eyelet, and stuffed the opening around the drag's shaft with construction adhesive. I now have a nice, light, and very extendable water-trapping retrieval hook tool. That was the best function I found for my drags after that infamous season of using them around here.

I know nothing of coon and drags, that's for sure.  I can see how tall trees and a climber could be problematic.  Now in my country a tall tree is around 20 feet and our cats get so wrapped up in the bottom limbs that the only real drawback is eyeball to eyeball finds!

Nope, I'll never give up my drags.  Heck, over half my traps are mobile!  My critters have  minimum foot damage, people don't see em / mess with them, set remakes are fast and simple and on occasion I get to practice my tracking skills!  All I need is for some kind sole to remind me to get rid of those dang short chains!
