Extractor scraping shells BAD
« on: January 25, 2005, 03:40:48 AM »
I got a 300 winmag barrel this weekend. Last nite,I took a resized piece of brass, dropped it in the chamber and tried to close the action. It would not close. I noticed that the extractor had not cleared the belt onthe cartridge. If I push the shell on down, the action will close. When I reopen the action the shell will lift out but I have a hard time getting it away from the extractor. The extractor is shaving brass off of the belt and scraping  down the sides of the shell and digging ditches in it. I want to reload for this gun and tearing up the cases kinda pisses me off.

Any help would be appreciated prior to my calling T/C.

I received a new 257 Roberts barrel from the TC custom shop with the wrong extractor installed and I actually could not chamber a round. A call to Fox Ridge resulted in a new proper extractor and spring sent to me in a few days which took care of problem. I would give them a call; they are very helpful.

I called T/C about 20 minutes ago and got a pleasant surprise. The guy in the shop(Ron) just told me that he'd send an extractor out today! No other questions or beating around the bush like other firearms makers that I've dealt with. Sure hope this fixes it,cause I really want to shoot it.

Thanks,
Robert

I traded for a used Encore barrel in 300 Winchester mag that had the same problem.  Two seconds of careful grinding solved the problem completely.  Only a tiny bit of metal had to be removed from the extractor.  Since you've already got a new one on the way, why not try this fix yourself, and if it gets botched, you'll have a replacement.
