ATTN: Colorado Springs AREA Cannon/Mortar shooters!!
« on: January 19, 2005, 07:15:32 AM »
Any Blackpowder cannon/mortar shooters around Colorado Springs area, not busy this weekend, Jan 22 & 23, stop by the Sertoma Gun Show at the Phil Long Expo. Ctr up on the far North end of Colorado Springs near the intersection of Academy and I-25.  I will have two tables of stuff and I plan on taking a couple scale cannon and perhaps a mortar.  Stop by and at least have a little "BIG bore blackpowder" chat/visit.   :D Thanks! UPDATE.... Well, I took three scale model cannon (two one inch bore and one .75 Cal.) plus a mortar, 35 m/m film can size projectile to the gun show hoping to generate some interest and conversation.  I have learned that the general public is interested in, mainly, one thing.  The most common question was, "How far will it shoot".  The military guys all asked, "what is the effective range". And, I answered them to the best of my ability and seemed to satisfy each asking those questions.  There seems to be more and more interest in shootable cannon/mortars around my area.  No one seemed to be really interested in buying one and I really didn't care to part with any of them.  The most amusing thing was that the fellow who shared one of my tables with is a retired gunsmith instructor at the local college and had a wealth of information about cannon and building them.  I really learned a lot from him and he has offered to help me with my projects since he has the lathe and necessary metal working equipment.  So, I really lucked out on this one.   Next, I'll try Albuquerque on the first weekend of March.  I know there are some BIG bore blackpowder shooters down in that area.

Probably a typical gun show, judging from the reactions.  You'll get a bit more positive response from the CW and collectors of vintage guns type of shows.

Typical that you run into some very knowledgable folks too.

Yeah, CW, it was worth the trip alone to make contact with the retired gunsmith instructor that I mentioned, who lives right here in my little town.  This chap is a former Brit and had been a gunsmith in many foreign countries, mainly Africa and surrounding areas.  He has also been commissioned to help restore cannon/mortars in England for some museums, so does have some valuable knowledge of "our" kind of stuff.  There is a large collectors show in Denver during the month of May and I'll have to attend that one to see if I can establish more such contacts.  The BIG gunshow in Tulsa in March also usually produces quite of few folks interested in the BIG bore black powder shooters.
