7mm WSM Handloads
« on: November 22, 2004, 11:31:33 AM »
I have a new caliber to handload for.  Does anyone have a favorite load in 7mm WSM that they would recommend?  What kind of performance has it given you?

I've just started with a M70 ss 7mm WSM, 3x9Zeiss; tried various loads and bullets. Settled on 140 Rem corelocPSP using IMR4831 @ 67gr. Not a max load but very consistent, easy MOA. The 140 gr. seems to be a little explosive on whitetails but really lays them down (in their tracks). I'm now experimenting with the 300 WSM and 165 SST.

What weight bullet? For most of my 7WSM loads, RL-19-22 or WXR work fine. The 4350's or 4831's also. Varget (56.5grns) and W760 works with 120grn bullets at good accurate but not barrel burning speeds. Had a good max load for my rifle using 160grn accubonds using 66.0grns RL-22 for a tad over 3000fps but had to seat the bullets down into the case for the max magazine length of 2.860" for the A-Bolt. Two other powders I've had good results with were MRP and VN560 with the 140grn bullets. I have tried many powders and bullets but not nearly everything. I mostly use Fed. 215 primers and have had very good accuracy for the most part.

My Howa likes 130 grain Sierra Match Kings with 71 grains of WXR.  Tried Varget and H414 which it didn't like.  4350 gave good results but lost some velocity.  I reload at the range so I tried a bunch of different loads and bullets.  WXR seemed touchy on being exactly at 71, couldn't be plus + or - a half grain.  WXR also filled the filled the case to the neck.  Accuracy was excellent with 5 shots all touching each other at 100 yards.  At 150 yards took a fair size muley off his feet when hit high in the shoulder.
