Which rings for a 50mm scope? Simmons WTC 6.5-20x50
« on: January 26, 2005, 07:41:28 AM »
Which rings do I need for a 6-20x50 Simmons White Tail Classic scope?  High rings?  Extra high?  Thanks!

I thought you were supposed to mount the scope as low as possible, and the weaver ramp should allow the use of shorter rings, yes?   I see a lot of pics of scopes on tall rings, is it because the hammer requires clearance?

I've heard a lot of good testimonials about these scopes, despite their low price.  I might as well give it a shot.

Burris makes some good rings...so to does Leupold,Weaver,Warne, and  Talley...all of my Handi's have Leupold's QWR high rings...so that I can take them off and put them back on very easily and switch between my different barrels...

Mac:

When you switch barrels and scope do you lose your POI?  I've often wondered how repeatable it would be to switch scopes from one barrel to another.  I don't have two barrels yet for my Handi but when I do I was planning on getting a scope to go with it.  If you don't lose the POI when you switch scopes I may consider using Leupold's QWR rings.

The scope is mounted to the barrel and its axis is parallel to the bore of the barrel. The relationship between the scope axis and the bore is not affected by removing the barrel any more than it would be opening the action.
so no you don't change POI.

Now quick release rings are another matter. I had a set of European quick release claw type mounts on a shotgun/rifle combo once. You could take the scope off and replace it and the POI would vary about 1/2 inch or .5 MOA at 100 yards in any direction. Not enough to matter for most reasonable ranges although it would be rough for a varmit or lang range rifle. My SKS has a quick disconnect scope mount and I have never noticed any real POI difference but it is not a target rifle to start with.

Back when I was shooting T/C Contenders I had a different scope for each barrel. It worked out best.

Several shooters at RFC have posted that removing and reinstalling a scope mounted with Leupold QRW or Warne QD rings changed POI no more than 1/4" @ 100yds.

If your talking about removing the scope from 1 barrel and putting it on another...yes you will lose it...IF..you haven't marked the scope original zero...and how many clicks it takes to get you on target with your new barrel...write everything down before removing or adjusting the scope...once you do...you can change to as many different barrels as you want...provided your using the same scope rail and not moving the rings on the scope...that's one of the reasons I use only the Ultra scope rails...it makes it easier for me...and I don't have to worry about bedding it with the front set screw on it...

As Quick has said...most the time you'll only be off by a small amount taking them off and reinstalling on the same barrel...mines even less...about 1/16"-1/8" off most of the time...it makes cleaning or working on them...or even transporting them a long way much easier...they are tuff rings...so to are the Warnes...and both cost  about the same amount..take a-look at a pair of them...you'll see what I mean....
