17 HMR for Coyote
« on: January 04, 2005, 06:38:16 AM »
I have read so many articles and forum discussion about the 17 HMR being
not enough gun for coyotes, I am almost afraid to try it. Either going to sell my
17 HMR or use it for crows.
Any of you experience bad things with this caliber on Yotes ?

I've read the same stuff as you, I've also read a lot of good stuff about the hmr and yotes. The new 20gr XTP or Gamepoints are 100yd yote medicine IF good shot placement happens. A broadside standing boil room shot puts em down quickly. A lot of shooters have experienced run offs shooting the Vmax bullets which are prone to blow up instead of penetrating. All it takes is a rib for that to happen, particularily inside of 50yds. Some shoot for the shoulder, another mistake with the Vmax. Head shots work but aren't the best choice for obvious reasons. I wouldn't recommend the hmr for a yote gun specifically when there are plenty of great centerfire rounds that are more practical for the task, but if the hmr is what you're carrying when a yote just happens to show up, I'd not hesitate to pop him if the conditions are right. Lots of yote kills reported at RFC if you've a mind to check em out...

I agree with quick punisher, the right bullet, the right shooter, the right shot, and it's a dead coyote for sure. I use my .22 Mag for coyotes and will shoot one with my .17 HMR someday. The .22 Mag is set up as a light weight gun I can carry all day long while snowshoeing miles through the woods while my17 HMR sports a Laminate stock set, and larger scope, that with the heavy barrel gets a bit tiresome for these old legs and hips after a few miles. I could change stocks and sighting systems around a bit but for now I'm happy with the way things are. I do think the right bullet in 20 grains with a good shot will have them just drop in their tracks....<><....

If planning on shooting a coyote,  I would rather hve my NEF with the .22 mag barrel on rather than the .17 HMR....considering the "anchoring power" capability of the two...just my observed 2 pennies...

This is a debate that will go on as long as people are able to hunt. They both will do the job under the right conditions. I don't have a HMR but if I had the choice to use either one it would be the 22 Mag. :D

I agree with both of you and use my .22 Mag set up specifically as my primary light weight coyote gun (Going to Maine about the 20th for coyotes). I want to use the .17 on at least one coyote just to try it. I want to use the 20 grain bullets and place the shot with care, I'm retired so I can wait for a good shot( :-D )....<><....

Punisher, one thing to keep in mind before you sell and go centerfire is that in MI if you plan to call and hunt at night with spotlight, its rimfire or shotgun only. I can't comment on the effectiveness of the 17HMR because I don't have one, but I'm betting the 22 mag is a better choice based on the numbers.

You are correct.
I use my "turkey" gun for night hunting.

I'd consider your hmr and advise a 223 or larger for yotes. They are tough critters. I'll wack little rodents with the hmr. If a .17 is of intrest go with a .17 Rem. Or a 204 Ruger my fit your bill. I also like little bores.

punisher, night hunting? coon? ??? I'm left wondering.
