If you are a handloader, I would recommend the .280 REM with the 26 inch barrel..I think you will be pleased at its performance and there is a wide variety of bullets.   If you don't reload, there is not a great selection of factory ammo in the area that I live for the .280, thus I would choose either the 308 or 30-06, both excellent calibers and plenty of factory ammo...IMHO

It is a hard decision...what you gotta do...is look at what you will eventually use it more for...the 308...and the 30-06 are both great calibers...so too is the 270 and 280...all can double as a target gun in the Handi if you want it to...they can be that accurate...so can the rest of your choices of barrels...any of the 357's or 44 or 45's can work well on deer and punch holes in paper...but...that's not helping a-lot I know...narrow you choices down...at least between pistol and rifle cartridges...then hit the books and see which one interest you the most...will you be handloading for it...or just shooting factory rounds...will your target shooting be short range 100 yards or less ...do you want to do a-lot of informal plinking.....perhaps some varmint hunting with it as well.. what about cast bullets...are you a big fan of them and what to utilize a-lot of them....they all have their good and bad points...and most will work good on deer and punching paper...even the 223 will work...provided your range and shot placement or perfect.... you also need to decide on what type of hunting you will be doing as well...since you want it to double for that too...will it be close range...will you want to use open sites or put a nice scope on it...or even a peep site...your not limited to just 2 calibers...nor or you limited to just 2 barrels...you have a wide range to choose from...from the 30" 45-70 Buff Classic down thru the 223 Bull Barrel.....and choosing between just the 308 and the 30-06 isn't the easiest to do either...both work and shoot great...both can shoot the same bullets...and both will give you the about the same velocity up thru the 165 grain bullets...then the 30-06 begins to have the velocity advantage with all the heavier bullets...but the 308 has the advantage of having more factory Match ammo available for it.....

Basicly...you need to rethink what you really want...then figure out what type ammo you want to be able to shoot in it...and what yardages you want to shoot with it for target shooting and deer hunting...and whither you'll be handloading for it...once you got it narrowed down a-little more...then figure out what will work best for what you want to use it for...oh yea...one other thing...how much recoil you want to deal with...but I probably have you confused more now...so we won't go there with that yet...

another person can steer you away from an obvious wrong choice (223 used for grizzly), but once you are deciding among the many correct options, that decision will have to come from "within."  There is too little difference between so many of our cartridge choices that the only thing you can go with, and defend, is what feels good to you.  Its hard to argue with - thats the one I wanted.  And there should be no reason why what I want and you want need to be the same.

Just because I like the -06 should be of no bearing on your decision to opt for the -06 over the less capable and less classic 308 just because of the HUGE differences in perceived recoil

Didn't know grizzly bears were in the equation? I thought he was talking about deer hunting and target shooting...

If you go with the 308 there is lots of cheap military ammo out there for plinking, but I'm not sure if it would work in the handi, milsurp ammo I mean.

Trapper.  What difference does it make man?? You know you are going to get them ALL.  I think I would go with the 308. Thats one I don't have. YET. I do have a Brwoning A-Bolt in that great caliber.
shot placement is everything.
