The Ruger 10/22 is a great starter target rifle.

I like the 7mm-08 for a starter hunting rifle that is what I bought for my son. But this caliber is large enough to cleanly take deer and elk. If you only want to shoot targets you can go with a .223 which you can get cheap ammo. for. As far as what brand, thats up to you as far as how much money you have to spend.
You can get this in .243 or 7mm-08 Good, small and light weight.

If you are just starting target shooting, start with a single shot, bolt action, .22 long rifle. Or alternatively a bolt action clip fed .22 lr. Look for a marlin or something in that line. Your local sporting goods store or one of the chains should have something. Of far greater importance contact a local Shooting Range and see if they offer classes, you will need instruction in safe gun handling  first.

im looking for a quality single shot that is low cost. :grin: 22 rim fire looking at a nef single shot cost is $103 = tax. anuy other ideas? :-)  appreciate your help! small for age need small gun

If you want to know more about the NEF, I would suggest looking at the forum for the rimfire NEF's.  I have an H&R Ultra in .243 and I get 1" groups at 100yds.  There can be very accurate rifles, but they need to be cleaned really good before shooting them.  The other thing to do is use bore polish.   This also helps a lot.  There is some very good advise on these forums as well as the centerfire forum.  I think for the money they are a very good rifle.

consider the CZ scout - its a bit more than the NEF or HR but will be much more conducive to learning positions and maintaining positons while shooting.

That forum is devoted to rim fire, mostly rifles, and the members have a good understanding of different rifles.  Be advised that there are some strange people that post on that board.

I'd contact the CMP & see if they have any Mossberg -44 rifles left. These are 22 target guns made back in the 40s & 50s.Very good rifles & cheap too. About $100 or less. They also have Kimber 22 rifles I think. These are a little more money but very high quality target guns.
