Rigging A Crappie Pole - Need Advice
« on: January 16, 2005, 03:04:53 AM »
Just bought a couple of the telescoping crappie poles.  They have a tip guide, but no other guides.

How is the best way to tie a line to them?
Pass it through the tip, spiral it around the pole and tie it at the handle end?
Can I tape an inexpensive crappie reel to the handle and spiral the line around the pole and out the tip?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

George

i have seen it done both ways.  either will work.  the telescoping poles are the cat's meow when it comes to delicate presentation.  you just cant cast as soft as you can place a bait.  and with skittish crappies, this is priceless.  i also like using this method for trout steams.  you can reach under branches and logs and put it right where you want it.  perfection is sometimes very simple.

I think, from the description, you are asking about what we call a jigger pole. Tie a length of line directly to the tip that is long enough for you to reach comfortably when the pole is held vertically. Casting is a pendulum motion, hold the hook, bait, lure in one hand, the pole in the other. Raise the tip of the pole and let go of the hook allowing the hook or lure to swing away from you to the target (fish). Very effective, especially from a boat, with bait, jigs, flies, a bobber, drop shot etc. Some of these pole are quite long, (10-12 feet or longer), this will allow you to reach over some timber, stickups or submerged cover that you could not retrieve through with more conventional gear. Waaaaaaaaaaaay fun when crappie are schooled up shallow and when the bite is really on no time is wasted on reeling in and re-casting. Give it a try, won't replace your other gear but it will sure add to it.
