Scopes for Sharps 45-70
« on: January 30, 2005, 07:17:14 AM »
As I slowly age, eyes are not working as well as they should with my Sharps 45-70.  I have vernier sights on the rifle, but eye fatigue causes problems seeing the target clearly.

I am planning on getting a scope for the rifle.

What are the acceptable options for scopes?

I have seen the long brass tube scopes on the internet.  One of the guys at the range had a 10X scope on a spring loaded mount - sort of a shock absorber mount - on his Hi-wall.

Suggestions?  Where to obtain acceptable scopes/mounts?  What mistakes should I avoid.

If you are planning to shoot NRA sanctioned BPCR silhouette or BPCR long range, the ’scope must meet specific criteria for tube diameter & power.

I only know of only 2 ‘scopes that meet the NRA criteria:

Montana Vintage Arms

RH Instruments.
http://www.lautard.com/RHO/

The MVA is a return to battery ‘scope; the RH Instruments is fixed.  Neither of them have the easiest mounts to adjust.

The spring mounted ‘scope moves forward under recoil & the spring returns it to its proper position. Examples of this are the Lyman Target Spots & Super target Spots &  the Unertl.

W/ a regular return to battery ‘scope, the Shooter must manually move the ‘scope to its proper postion.

A good  scope is not inexpensive; neither are good mounts.
