270 winchester & H4831 questions
« on: February 01, 2005, 09:23:51 AM »
Hi everyone. I am starting to load for the 270 win, shoulda started a long time ago,and have some questions on load data I have.I want to state that I am not newbie reloader,I have been reloading for a good while for  calibers from 22 Hornet to 45-70.I am going to be using H4831,Win LR primers,Win brass and Hornaday 150 gr. sp bullets. The question I have is that my Hodgdon Annual manual 2004 lists 55.7 gr of H4831 as a max load, and the Lee reloading manual lists 58 gr as max, with no listing of components used.I am going to be using the same components as in the Hodgdon manual, but was wondering about the info I found in the Lee manual.I also know that the info in the Lee manual is regurgitated from other manuals and compilied into the Lee book.If anyone has info on the 58 gr load and components used in it I would appreciate it.I don't want to overload the gun ,but I want to get the best velocity out of it I can, safely.
BTW, the gun is a Rem 700. Any info would be helpful.Thanks.

H-4831 From 48.2 grains to 58.0 grains
 Winchester WLR Primer

But I prefer:
RL-25 From 50.7 grains to 62.0 grains
 Winchester WLR Primer

Try the 4831SC instead, it meters much easier and it works great.

I gotta agree with Questor.  I use the short-cut version of H4831 when loading for the .270 Winchester.

My favorite loads using H4831 with 150 grain bullets is 56.0+ grains.  I load for more then one .270  so at times I do loaded 56.5 grains of H4831.

I do not loaded heavier then 56.0 with the Sierra 150 grain boattail.  I started having pressure indicators in two different rifles.  Great bullet just use less powder.  This problem occurred in my early loading days before I had a case trimmer.  Case length cannot be discounted as part of the problem.

I have seen 58 grains lisited as max in some of the manuals, but I have never been able to reach it.

Accuracy with H4831 has far exceeded most factory loads.  I believe that the near(C) or compressed(C) load makes for greater accuracy when using H4831 in the .270.
