Barrel accessory program...
« on: January 28, 2005, 03:44:00 PM »
My serial is # NK393xxx.  Will HR sell me a .308 barrel?  I've e-mailed them and haven't got an answer yet.

As I understand the program, they will not. Your serial number should be NN (1999) or later with the second letter increasing with each year. Your NK was made in 1996.

From a previous post, it looks like it might be a 45-70, with a mannlicher stock, no less!!

with the mannlicher stock.

I presently have a .222 rem tack driver with a lot of sentimental value that I will always keep and use for varmints, plinking and making nice little cloverleafs in targets.  The .45/70 will make a nice brushbuster, but I need a flat shooter for the open country deer hunting and long range coyote bustin' on the farm.

I have narrowed my choices to the following:

1.  .308 win (bull barrel if I can find one)
2.  .270 win
3.  7mm-08

These three calibers are ballistic triplets IMHO.  The .308 carries a tad more bullet energy, the .270 shoots a little flatter and the 7mm-08 seems to fit right between the two.  I think I'd opt for the .308 if I can get the bull barrel, but have always had an affinity for the venerable .270.  I have located an Ultra Comp in .270 locally and have entertained the idea of selling the .45/70 to get it, but I think I want to try and get a barrel instead and keep the .45/70.  Besides the mannlicher stock is just too cool for school.

Being a woodworker, I have also been planning to duplicate the mannlicher fore end because there seems to be a desirable piece.

I'll be posting a WTB classified for the barrel choices I want.

Good choices all...and I can understand you not wanting to turn lose of the 45-70 barrel...but if you do deceide to...PM me...maybe we can work something out for it  I do have a unfired 22" 270 barrel sitting in the safe....

If NEF will not rebarrel your rifle, I think the safe thing to do is buy a newer rifle.  These older receivers were not made as hard as the newer SB-2.  Yours might or might not hold up to it, but why risk it?  You could easily stretch the receiver and ruin it for BOTH barrels.  It has happened before.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Speaking of the mannlicher stock/forearm, H&R had some in stock for sale last year, of course I procrastinated and thought, well since they still have some I'll buy one when I get a few bucks extra. Well of course that time never came, so last week checking with H&R on the phone to get some info for another here (Buff Classic checked American Black Walnut forearms, appx 12" long, $36.00, and yes, they fit right on your Handi or Sportster!!!) I asked in passing how much the Mannilcher forearms were, they said they had none left!!! Now I want one, anyone out there have one to sell me?  Thanks for listening to my tale of woe, when will I ever learn!!....<><....

I put a .243 barrel I got from someone here and then found out about the hardness of the frame. I woulnd't risk it. I sold the barrel to another person and then bought a complete rifle in .243 and am a happy camper.

I then wound up with a frame and no barrel 'cause I traded a .44 Mag for the first .243 barrel, so I sent my frame to NeF and had them fit a .223 barrel to it annd do the trigger. I have yet to get it back, but am looking forward to it. Sweet! :D
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens
