.25 ACP Breech Plug for NEF Sidekick/Huntsman at PR
« on: January 29, 2005, 04:22:53 AM »
First I would like to credit rwullsch with this find. So send all applicable finders fees to him.

Take a look, just saw this last night. I am sure this will be better than the primer carriers, but definitely not as handy. Does anyone know what shell holder is needed for .25 ACP? I might just have to bite the bullet and buy one. Check it out. I think he is stretching the before groups of 3.5" to the after .6" a little bit though. I haven't seen one yet that won't shoot under 2" out of the box with the right load.

For standard press it is a #29 in an RCBS.

I can't believe for a minute that the primer makes THAT much difference.  It only eliminated the occasional flyer in my Omega.  He either took the best case/worst case scenerio (never seen a ML shoot .6" ON AVERAGE) or did some fancy marketing shooting.

Andy,

I hear ya, I don't have an accuracy problem at all with my Huntsman. The ONLY reason I am considering this is to eliminate the blowback and hopefully get a BP with a hex head for easier BP removal. It sure won't be more convenient in the least, the primer carriers are very user friendly. I just don't like the blowback. Is it worth it? That is a question that will have to be answered by the person buying it I guess, and there is only one way to find out that I know of.  I'll let you guys know what I decide.

Anyone that has the Encore .25 ACP conversion, PLEASE let us know what you think. Thanks.

Thanks Keith!

I found out it is a #15 for the LEE Auto Prime, and I may go that route. I have a RCBS Rockchucker that is collecting dust that would also work at home. Thanks.

.25ACP is it worth it?

I have both the auto prime and a couple of presses so I can do both. I have the conversion for my Omega. I got it because it was supposed to fix the Triple Seven crud ring problem. It fixes about 80% of my problem. I switched to Black Mag'3 and no more problem. I really like the conversion over the 209 primer just from the ease of handling the primer. The .25 brass is easier to handle and I can carry them loose in my pocket more safely than 209 primers.  I have a lot of .25ACP brass so that is not a prolem for me. I have not seen much difference in how the rifle shoots however it has never shot bad to begin with. If you get a breechplug with a hex to facilitate removal that could be a plus also. The Omega plug is that way to start with and so is the conversion. I am not sure if they are making the whole plug or just remachining the originals.

There wasn't a huge difference with the 'crud ring' after I went with the 25ACP conversion in my Encore. It was there and managable before, and its about the same after. It was a little less than it was when owned a Huntsman and used the 209 with loose Pyrodex.

The reason that I made the conversion was to reduce the affect of the 209 primer on the load that I use. The powerbelts go into the barrel easily as do the Pyrodex pellets. The 209 primer is powerfull enough to push the load up the barrel prior to the ignition of the majority of the powder. Especially in a clean barrel. My presumption is that this affect caused the first shot flier that I was getting out of a clean barrel.

With the 25ACP conversion, I no longer get a first shot flier. Nor do i get any blow back. I use the decapper tool from an old .223 Lee Loader to decap the used shells and after cleaning with soap & water, I prime the shells using the Lee AutoPrime tool.

I'd be curious as to whether or not there will be a hex head on the Huntsman 25ACP BP. I'd bet they'll adapt the existing Huntsman BP for the 25ACP shell as they did for the Encore??
