Hog Hunting in NH?

I was just watching something on TV about hog hunting and they were talking about the wide spread areas that hogs have infested and they mentioned NH. Is there anyone out there that hunts in NH? I would be interested in a hunt myself.

At one time, some wild boar escaped from the private preserve at Corbin Park in Sullivan County.

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a stable population and those shot are the escapees from this place.

Yeah. I hate to be the bearer of such news. I too have wondered why is it that the NH law pamphlet had wild boar listed as a non-game animal with no closed season and no limit.

About three decades ago, my dad hunted near that big place( it is 32,000 acres with an 80 mile long fence around it) and a storm blew down some fencing. Thus a small population escaped. He knew of three hunters who shot the escapees outside the preserve. To the best of my knowledge, the few that do escape are shot rather quickly by the local people.

That must be one heck of an odd shaped piece of property for 80 miles of fence to go around it. 32000 acres is exactly 50 square miles which is roughly 7 miles to a side or 28 miles of fence.

That makes the 80 miles of fence nearly three times what is needed. I happen to know about this kinda stuff cause I have 36500 acres fenced where my lodge is at in South Africa.  That piece has been fenced with a 2 meter fence for almost 80 years now. It's a heck of a project to maintain it everyday and make sure nothing has broken it. We have over 100 cape buffalo and 16 white Rhino in there. Not sure of the exact amounts of the other species, but there are 28 different big game speices there. Many can come and go as they please. 2 meter fencing is not a deterent to most antelope speices.  Most can jump it from a stand still, the other go under it so frequently there are areas of very high traffic under it in many places.

Some of the newer properties and the repaired sections are being done with 3 meter fence. That is a deterent to most jumpers. Kudu will clear a ten foot fence and younger Eland bulls with a running start. Most of the others are captive though.

I think it's bout 24,000 acres if that helps.  Say an article on it because of a hunting accident where a taxidermist from Manchester NH was shot.  Have to be pretty wealthy to be a member or an "owner" of a share of the property.

That would be a little over 30 miles of fence I think.

The other day I went with my dad to a taxidermist who has the opportunity to hunt on that place from time to time.

Here is the scoop from what I was told. I saw a map of the place. You can look at it on a topo map in Sullivan County New Hampshire. He told me that they have 80 miles of fence around the property and that the land was bought just after WW2 for around $1.50 an acre. I looked at a map of the place and they have sections where members hunt. So you wouldn't have too many people in one area. They also have areas where no one is to set foot in. A sanctuary of sorts. If a member steps foot in one of these areas, it is a $1000 fine.

It is a very exclusive club. You have to be voted in and the shares are 250,000 with a yearly membership of 35,000. As a member you can take a guest and shoot whatever he allows off his allotment. I believe the taxidermist said his friend can shoot 52 wild boar( he owns an insurance company so he has the cash for this) and some number of elk they have.

Like I stated before, a storm blew down some fencing and a number of animals escaped. But to the best of my knowledge, they're all shot out.

You know off and on I have heard it hinted that Ruger had a large tract of land in NH that they used for gun test by writers and such. Any chance this is one in the same. Has anyone else heard about the Ruger property?

From what I know, Ruger owns around 3,000 acres abutting the southeastern part of Corbin Park. I was told he wanted to buy the place outright but they refused to sell to him.

There was a bit of flack, a few years ago, about then-Governor Bill Weld of Massachusetts shooting a wild boar at a private preserve in NH... I think it was the same place.  He's an "old money", patrician-type guy (Republican), so I'm not suprised if he's a member ... although he might have been a guest (like the goose-hunting Washington types at the corporate-owned lodges in Eastern Shore Maryland).

I was attending the US Naval War College in Newport RI and an Okie fighter pilot buddy of mine & I found out that Ruger was attending a conference their & he & I beat feet to volunteer to rescort him for the day. We spent the day with him & ended up hanging out for the afternoon with him & some of his high roller buddies on his 85 ft powerboat he kept in Newport. At the time he got around with a cane & was pretty slow moving with what seemed like arthritis.
My buddy ended up doing a 6 month stint as admirals aide & saw Riger a couple times. Ruger belonged to the NH club but never used it.
From my limited experience he was a pretty regular guy for someone with as much money as he had.
