22 hornet, what bullets for coyote, why small pistol primers
« on: February 08, 2005, 06:31:51 AM »
just got an NEF synthetic in 22 hornet and mounted a Leupold M8-4X, but I have a Bushnell 4-12x that could go on it too.

The 35 v-max sounds like it could be a little light on the penetration for yotes. The 50g. bullets are most likely too heavy for enough speed to have decent tragectory. So I'm leaning towards the 40-45g. bullets. The ones to catch my eye are the 40g. BT or the 45g. Sierra Hornet. I have some AA no. 9 but I'll probably get some Lil-gun too. But my buddy liked 1680 in his Hornet.

I have seen where a LOT of people use small pistol primers in thier Hornets, but they never say WHY? What's the deal? What's the difference. Please clue me into which direction to go on primers. I have seen where some folks report accuracy gains with the small pistol primer. But last time I checked the case looked to me like a small rifle case, hmmmmmmmm.

Thanks for your help deciding,
Redrider.

I don't have a hornet, but the 40gr Hornady Vmax works real well in my 223 as I suspect it would in the hornet as well.  Very accurate bullet.

As far as primers go, it is based on the powder charge to be ignited.  Some may have tried the pistol primers for (maybe?) hotter ignition, not sure if they are hotter or not.  I'd suggest working loads from the book and go with them.  Seems like most have reported the best success with LiL Gun powder.

Use a small pistol MAGNUM primer. A guy from REDDING die's told me to do that. This was at a reloading seminar. Put's out a lot more flame then a regular small rifle primer ( I think). Why not use a MAGNUM rifle primer???  Don't know?? :?  :?  :?

Reloading Seminar?  They have reloading seminars!  How do I find out about these?  Would like to go to one.  Are they listed anywhere?  Thanks.

Posted the same thing over at PM, here is what someone there told me about the primer question

http://www.predatormastersforums.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=010271

Hey Handi, thanks alot for the reply and no offense. but I'm sure that a 40g. V-Max out of a .223 has totally different terminal performance as opposed to one shot out of a Hornet.  We are talking about one bullet going somewhere around 3600fps and the other at 2800fps.

But I am still left wondering about a coyote bullet out of the Hornet?  Do you all think that a 40g. BT would be better for yotes than a 45g. Sierra Hornet.  Or is it too close to call?

Thanks to all,
Redrider.

Hornady makes a bullet specificly for the MV you can get with the Hornet; it's the 45 grain HP BEE bullet. It has a large hollow point but is a bit more stoutly constructed than the highly frangible vmax type, which is a varmint bullet designed to explode when it hits.

I shot a 70-plus pound feral dog with one at about 40 yds, out of my 218BEE marlin lever gun.  It hit just behind the shoulder, broadside shot, and dropped him instantly.  When I got to him a few seconds later he was dead.

Ought to work great on coyotes out to 100 or so.

redrider,
You're welcome and none taken.  I think that Vmax is more frangible than you think, especially the 40gr.  If it were a 50 or 55gr I'd agree with you.

It's worth a try.  I tried some of the "Hornet" bullets in my 223 and accuracy was poor at best.  I can make a 3 shot group that hides behind a dime with the 40gr Vmax.

redrider,
I use Benchrest small rifle primers with a 40 gr. BT.  I shot AA 1680 for years until I discovered Lil Gun.  Out of my 14" Contender barrel Lil Gun yields less muzzle blast with similar accuracy.  I have used both 35 gr.     V-max as well as the 40 gr. BTs and it seems the BTs hold together much better.  One theory on the pistol vs. rifle primer is that the pistol primer will deliver a more gentle ignition than a rifle primer.  I read that somewhere, but I have never tested this because I don't benchrest shoot alot.  I love my hornet.  Good luck!
