Need Help!!
Can I drop my powder charge so the 40 grain V-Max's don't leave a small dinner plate size hole in the fur? Been using 38.5 grains of Varget, but it renders the fur useless. Prints nice on paper, but I want to save the fur for tanning. I read somewhere that I could drop down to 30.5 grains and the Max would enter, then explode, leaving no exit. Or should I try FMJBT's or go to a 50-55 grain softpoint. Please help. I can't afford a new gun.(.223 or .17) My gun is a Ruger 22-250 "All-Weather" 1 in 14". Short of giving up on Coyotes and Bobcats or going to a shotgun with OO, I'm depressed and can't seem to find that combo. I shot a Yote today at 75 Yards and the entry hole was the size of a quarter and it went through, exiting/blowing the other side out.

A week ago I tried a 55 grain V-Max on another Yote at 100 yards and it blew the entire neck area out.

You could slow down your v-max, but it probably won't help alot. You may well have to go to a softpoint to keep that hole down in size. I've found that little plastic tip intact just under the skin of a couple of creatures I've shot with my .17 hmr, so apparently it will come off and allow bullet expansion pretty early, even at velocities around 2600 fps. My guess would be a more solid bullet a little slower. Good luck!

Hi have you tried a Nosler BT 40gr bullet the BT holds together a little better than a v-max i dont think they blow up as bad and on the FMJ bullets you will have some run off you will have to track i have fount one bullet that wont shoot thru a coyote and that is a Hornady 50gr SPSX they blow up on the end side they say the max vel of the bullet is like 3300 before it comes apart but they will take it i use 36.5 grs of Varget pushing them out of my 22 250

They say to control pelt damage keep velocities below 3000 fps.

I got some .40 Serria Blitz King bullet for my .222, but not sure how they will do yet as I haven`t killed anything with them, but the Serria Blitz bullets I think will stay in side. You would have to load down alot with them though as Serria says 3,500 fpts. max. on it`s Blitz bullets.

I have used 52 grain hp with lots of success, I put 32 grains of h-380 it is around 2600 fps this seems to work well, I live in nevada and have lots of open country, and most shots are within 200 yards, people that say they shoot them any farther are usually full of it. If your gun is sighted in at 100 yards the drop at that velocity is very minimal at 200 yards. :grin:
