Gun Trade-In Has Town's Cops in Hot Seat

This sets my rear-end on Fahr (thats fire to you non sounterners...heh heh)

Fox news

SWEETWATER, Fla. — The town of Sweetwater isn't making friends with other local police departments.

Sweetwater's top cop says he doesn't have enough money to buy new guns for his officers — so he's got no choice but to trade in old guns for new ones at a local gun store.

Critics call the "trade-in" program a big mistake.

"When you buy a used gun, it's like buying a used car — you're not going to pay top dollar for it," said John Shanks, director of law enforcement relations at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (search). "These guns are going to go back into the civilian market. They're going to be very inexpensive to buy."

But Police Chief Roberto Fulgueira (search) says that unless $20,000 magically appear in his budget, he is forced to trade in weapons.

"I have a moral obligation to my men, to their families and to the community," said Fulgueira. "Number one, I'm not going to send my men out there with weapons that are going to malfunction."

Man, what a great and exciting job Mr. Shanks must have convincing Law enforcement that handguns are bad.

I wonder how old these guns are? and what brand they are that the top cop there thinks they are going to malfunction/ Most civilian guns get shot a lot more than most police pistols. So I would think these trade ins would be in good shape unless they were junk to begin with?
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I believe when this story first aired, they were Glocks.  I own a few Glocks and one Police trade in Glock 22.  The Glock 22 has had about 3000 rounds through it since I purchased it, and I am pondering buying a new recoil spring and guide rod just because.  Besides some of the finish wearing off, I have never had issues with it.  I don't think you can reasonably wear out a Glock, or any other well made pistol.

They are not just LEO guns....

Most of the guns being sold are guns that were turned in by civilians to be destoyed.  This is a breech of trust on behalf of the police dept.  To encourage people to turn in guns to get them out of circulation so they will not end up in criminal hands someday or be used in a crime.....and then turn around and sell these guns for ANY PROFIT WHATSOEVER...should be dealt with as a severe crime.  The rest of the guns involved are ones that were confiscated in crimes.  I sincerely hope these guys lose their shirts for this innapropriate behavior.  It is a rotten thing when LEO's consider themselves 'above the law'.  These actions are as bad, or worse than cops that commit purgery in court and lie to get convictions.  Law and Order cannot be dispersed by CRIMINALS.  Justice cannot be served by people that are entrusted to enforce the law, yet break the law to do so.

I know that this link below deals with a Glock 17, but it's may have a bit of bearing on the 22 as well.

Robert I think that is funny as heck as I have always been against gun buy backs and figured it was a tool of the anti gunner. So for the cops to sell such guns I think it is Irony in the greatest sense and it works for me!

J.H.  I agree.  It is a bunch of B.S.  I have no doubt that a lot of very valuable firearms, antiques and such have been turned in on these programs.....and I seriously doubt if ANY of the good firearms are destroyed.  Just another form of corruption.  Please do not misunderstand me.  I am not down on L.E.O.  Cops are just people.  There are good ones and bad ones.  I judge every person by how they treat people, not by creed, color or position.

Yea I can see how you think they may be corrupt but then heck some of them are! there are a lot of good cops out there for the right reasons but it seems like we only hear about the bad ones but then that is how the media operates anyway.

True, very true.  An interesting thing about this discussion.  When I got out of the Army after six years, I took a law enforcement exam like any good Joe would.  To make a long story short, I turned quite a few jobs down because some of the officers thought they were a little too "Hooah".  Tackleberry from Police Academy comes to mind.  When I told them some of the schools I had attended in the service I was met with not so friendly looks.

Accually if you play your cards right, the gun buy back programs are a good thing. You get a POS parts 22 rifle for 5-10 bucks. Take off what you need. Hold onto the gun, then sell it to the buy back program for 100 bucks or what ever. then take that money and go buy a good gun. Only problem is that after a while, they catch on. Omaha doesnt have buy back programs anymore, and that is where all this BS started. Guess my friends and I ruined it

Police trade-ins have been a staple in the gun trade as long as I have been shooting. SOG has some for sale right now.

I was a dealer when departments all across the country were going to semi-autos. I was only the littlest of little guys, but I know I sold at least a hundred trade-ins. 4" S&W Model 10s were the staple, but there were all sorts of goodies out there. My personal favorites were the NYSP Colt Official Police 6" and I think I paid $70 each for those. All those guns were carried a lot and shot a little and were far better than they looked. NYSP had really good armorers and the lockwork was basically that of a Python so it was like getting a fixed sight Python for under a hundred bucks.

Another great deal was that at least one department decided to go to semi-autos a couple of years after re-equipping with stainless Ruger Security Sixs. I got two out of that deal that were new in the box. My guess is that they were unissued spares.
It is the duty of the good citizen to love his country and hate his gubmint.
