22 Mag general accuracy
« on: October 29, 2005, 05:47:28 AM »
As a gneral rule, what kind of accuracy should I expect from the .22 Mag round?

I have a Marlin 88something bolt action. Stainless barrel, laminate stock. My groups at 100 yards tend to run in the area of 4 inches plus or minus. This is an average - with several different cartridges and bullet weights, hot weather, cold weather, strong wind, calm wind, dirty barrel, spotless barrel..............

I realize this is no high velocity centerfire. Is averaging four inches or so at 100 yards about right for this cartridge? I'm also talking an off the shelf rifle just as it came from Marlin. No modifications. I have a centerfire 3x9 scope mounted.

Thanks!

I just shot the same weapon yesterday - not my gun but a friend asked me to take it to the range and provide 100 rounds -   so why not. It has a Simmons 3 X9 scope on it. I was pretty please with the groups at 25 and 50 yards - to my amazement at 100 yards the groups dropped off to the left and about 4"s low - okay - cross hairs hung up - tap - tap - and shoot again - same groups. I could not get any better than a 4+- group at 100 yards - was very dis-pleased - as I wanted to take the gun back to him showing what it could do - he gets the 50 yard target - under 3/4" - I guess I was amazed that my Marlin (17Hummer) will go dime sized groups at 100 yards. I thought the 22 mag would come - close - but was very far from it - with yours and this one - what are we doing wrong??
Oh yes - forgot - I used two different types of ammo - with the same results.
Don't cry because its over - Smile because it happened!

Most people say a good one will shoot just over an inch at 100.I just finished breaking mine in its a Marlin 982vs.Mine would shoot around 1.2 inches at 100 when I got it,then the accuracy would fall off to around 2 inches, and more. The problem with mine was copper fouling(I think).I cleaned it with Hoppes and no change then I scrubded it out with butches bore shine,Now its a shooter.I have to clean mine every 20 to 30 shots or the accuracy leaves,It will shoot groups now that most wont believe unless they see it for themselves.Mine shoots the Remington Vmax the best then Winchester supremes next, both of these are under an inch at 100,then the Winchester 40 grain hollow points at 1.2 of an inch.I just had to have patience(break in) and learn how the gun wanted to be cleaned.

I have both the MN25 and the 883SS both will print under an inch with the ammo that each likes the MN25 will shoot just about anything except for PMCs, just hates them looks like a shotgun blast with 10 rounds.  The 883SS really likes the CCI and Remington HPs it likes the Remington a little more will shoot in the .7s with this round.  I have not tried the  .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire 30 Grain Hollow Point TNT  from CCI as yet so i do not know how it will shoot.

This round may not shoot as flat as a 17HMR but it sure packs a bigger punch at 100 yards.  :)

wind can affect a .22 mag some at 100 yards....was it windy as heck?

also, your squeaky clean barrel might actually be worse for accuracy. with rimfires most guys only clean em when the accuracy drops off after hundreds of rounds.

try shooting it about 50 times and then see if accuracy is better. i had to shoot my marlin .17 HMR a couple hundred times before it really started making tight groups way out there.

The one that I sold to an uncle couple month ago (882SSV...same as the 882VS) shoot an average of 3/4 to 1 inch @ 100 yrd with Winchester Supreme 34gr. It also like the CCI maxi-mag 40 gr.....good for the price I think! Also, mine is picky too about cleaning...just after cleaning it was not very good....after 20 round trought it,...better and after maybe 50, I have to clean it again! Hope the next one i'll buy(probably 7000 22lr) will be less picky than that about cleaning :?

I havent tried my 925M at a hundred yards yet.  At 50 yards the groups string vertically after the first shot.  3 shots will stay within 1.5" but do string up as I fire.  If I let it set a while between shots they will clover leaf inside an inch at 50yards from a bench.  This is a hunting rifle,  so Im not overly concerned about the vertical stringing,  however I do fear what will happen at 100 yards.  I need to get better glass on it before I get serious about 100 yard shots.  Overall I like the accuracy of the .22 mag and Ive only used the 40gr winchester hollow points in the gray box.  So far this firearm shoots about as good as I expect for myself.
