ok, all you handi 30-06 owners ...

i'm going to enter a postal accuracy contest for non-custom, box stock hunting rifles.
what are your accuracy loads for your '06 handis?
with a 1-10 twist i'd assumed 180s might be best but everything i've seen here says 150s or 165s.
all i've shot in mine is factory rem 150-grainers, and only 12 shots to boot. shot just enough to get the scope lined up in the middle of deer season, then killed two whitetails. looked like 1.5 inches with the remmy factory stuff.
what say you? the contest calls for five shots at each of two bulls on the same target, 100 yards, from a bench, and five shots at 100 yards from a field position (my choice) at a plain piece of 8.5x11 typing paper.
i figure to sit in a low chair and shoot off my elbows, or rig a "tree" on which to lean.
my rig (4x32 trashco aboard) will be the least expensive rig to shoot, and i'd like to show up some dandies with my handi.
i have imr4064 and h414 on hand, cci and winchester primers, and scores of empty brass in a variety of manufacturers. no bullets, and i'm on a fairly tight budget.
my inclination is hornady flat base 150s or 165s.

Fish
As far as most accurate bullet for 30 cals. I believe it is usually a 168gr match bullet, but that is not a hunting bullet.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

As others will tell you, each barrel is differant.  What shoots well in my 30-06 might or mightnot shoot well in yours.  But for brass, I use Remington.  Powder I have had the best results with IMR-3031, IMR-4064, and Reloader #7, in that order.  Bullets  Speer 125gr TNT, Sierria 165 gr HPBT Gameking, and Sierria 180gr spitzer boat tail Gameking.  Although for Hunting Big Game I am partial to the Nosler 180gr Partition.  It is not quite as accurate as the Sierria, but I have more confidence in it's stopping ability.  I have a three inch group with the Speer 125s at three hundred yards.  Remington cases, CCI large rifle primers, and 51 grains of IMR-3031.  This gives me approx. 2900 fps.  I have the rifle sighted in for three hundred yards.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I use remington brass and i love IMR4350 i have had GREAT accuracy in these three rifles Remington 700BDL 22" barrel New England handi rifle 22" and ruger 77 ultralight with a 20" barrel using hornady 150 BTSP,hornady 150SP and remington 150 PSPCL in front of 59.0 grains. And with the same point of impact  using 57.0 of IMR4350 with remington 180 grain PSPCL. The remington 700 had a slightly tighter group with the 180's.  The 180's also shoot great in my remington 760 pump.

try this : first get your self a scope you can crank up you can't hit what you can't see the better you can see the better you can shoot.  as for a load try the 168 matchkings they do good in about all 30 cals . take them and IMR 4350 and work up in .3 grain groups and see whats best .

one other thing is wait as long between shoots as possible . my 30-06 handi will shoot a lot better groups if shot cold then if warm.

and if the rules say "hunting position" then buy a bipod and go prone you'll probably shoot better.
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

I've been prepairing for my upcoming Hog hunt this weekend down with Like2Hunt...and Digger...and I've put together a real nice 190 grain Hornady load and a 200 grain Nosler Partition load...both holding around 1 to 1-1/2" groups...still tweaking them and hope to get them down a little tighter tommorrow morning...I'll let you know how they work out...gotta beat that 1" factory 165 grain Ballistict Silver tip load I have...

My handi really seems to like bullet weights at around the 150gr range.
I load mostly rem brass, CCI large rifle primers w/ IMR 4350
best accuracy comes at about 57.5 grains of powder.
I dont have a crony but speer load manual shows the load at around 2700fps mv.

You might want to start lower than that and work up....till you find that sweet spot.

These barrels are a bit heat sensitive and will vertical string groups if it gets too hot.

Let us know what you work up.

'preciate the support so far. i'm an old hand at handloading,  have loaded for three previous handis, and have benched a passel of 'em so i know the technical/barrel heating/keep the bag close to the hinge stuff.
just looking for a consensus on first bullet weight to try. it's looking like 150 and then 165. the good ol' m-1 military load of a 150 at 2,700 might be the best place to start.
but i may end up just bagging a box of hornady factory hunting loads in 165 grain and be done with it. that'd give me five to verify sighting in and 15 for the entry.
but do keep the suggestions coming. thanks again.
