Do ya'll ever do anything with them whistle pigs? My wife had a history teacher in high school back in WV that used to swear by groundhog shoelaces. He said they were the toughest, longest lasting shoelaces you could buy. They were hard to find on up into the late 60's though.
Ain't got none of them things this far south.

I haven't, we don't have em here, but I've read of several people on RFC that have eaten them, said they tasted great when handled and cooked proper.

Typically when you hit a woodchuck with a .22-250, .243, or even a .223 there isn't much left in any kind of shape to do anything with. :wink: However there are folks around here that cook and eat the young ones. I never have personally but if someone offered it I'd have a go.

I've had groundhog stew, it's darkish meat and kinda greasy.. Seemed like it tasted ok tho, I don't have any bad memory that stands out.

The topic got started cuz many 17hmr shooters shoot em in the head at up to 200yds and someone wanted to know what to do with em cuz they didn't want to shoot critters and just leave em lay, they prefer to eat what they kill.....up to a point.....no one enjoys eatin crow! :-D

I don't know about that, crows eat some pretty nasty stuff and you know what they eat is what they taste like!!! :eek:

My grandmother used to bbq the groundhogs we would bring in. They are not too bad that way, but like Haywire said, they are kinda greasy if memory serves me right. It's been many years.

lol, speaking of crows...

I had a good one today...

Saw a crow land in at tree line at an estimated 275y. I quickly grabbed the Handi 223 to test er out with some BULK 52g Speer match hp's. Put the hairs over his chest and let it rip. A puff of feathers and what was left of the bird fell to the ground.

One of the better shots I've made lately...not bad for the ol' Handi rifle and some cheapo ammo.

I need to start reloading for the thing, I have had everything I need since I currently reload for another 223 but I have been havin' too much fun shooting it :grin:

But yes, groundhogs are my favorite hunting I would say. Nothin' better than walking through a large field with the wind blowin' in your face on a nice warm day....

Groundhog (woodchuck around here) is a somewhat greasy meat...stick with the younger ones.

There are some " kernels " or glands under the front legs that should be removed...can be nasty otherwise..

Been a long time so I'm not real fresh on the recipe etc.

No 'chuck hunting around here on feb 2...gotta be kidding..

If the groundhog sees his shadow, it's 6 more weeks of winter...
if not...it's a month and a half !...LOL

Heck,

Around here, the groundhog would have to dig out from under 2 feet of snow just to get to the surface to see his shadow.

I used to take the young groundhogs I shot to an old Penn Dutch lady we knew in town, and she'd cook 'em up for us. If I remember correctly, it was a pretty drawn out process where she'd soak 'em, then parboil 'em, then cook 'em, but they were pretty good eating.

Now to the shoelaces, I'd be afraid that they'd be a little to short for my boots.

It's Wednesday, Feb. 2, about 5:45 PM, and my wife and I have just arrived home from Punxatawney, Pa, Weather Capitol of the World. I can report that the critter in question is alive and well at this time. I do think, however, that he bit the man that was...helping him... this morning! Leather gloves prevented injury.
Beautiful community, wonderful people, lotsa fun.
Report was, he saw his shadow!
