Just for fun and because it's kind of slow right now.

Say you won a contest and the grand prize was ONE big bore rifle/cartridge of your choice.  Only requirement is that the rifle be one you will use and not just hang on the wall.  What would your choice be and why?  Lawdog

OK, Lawdog.
 375 H&H, Winchester.
From comments on this forum, and answers provided to my questions, that seems to be the cartridge for me (certainly not everyones choice, I realize)
Long range,
bear stopping potential ( hope I never have to find out)
manageble recoil, given proper fit and weight.
The choice of rifle is based on info from a website mentioned on this forum, Africa Hunter Forum  http://209.221.146.133/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi
The topic was about controlled round feeding, and when someone in that line of business speaks, I'll listen!
This would be my choice for Alaska. Moose, Caribou, you hunt the Bears, I'm probably better off huntin...Ptarmigan?
I don't think such a firearm would hang on the wall, I'd do my dead level best to wear it out. Appreciate the chance to speak.        Woodbutcher

I would have to choose a Drillings double rifle in 416 Rigby.  :D

470 Nitro Express Double for me. It's the only thing I can consider as a step up from my .375. And I would load it with blackpowder and cast lead bullets for deer.
Woodbutcher, when you have the bucks, get that .375. The only problem you will have after that is trying to explain that sh*t eating grin to the "shooters" you work with.

Double 700 Nitro Express from Holland and Holland.  I still dreaming about a african safari I plan to do a few times in my life.  Reason being I could take all Big 5.  They are remarkably beautiful.  I am sure the recoil alone would kill me but would be willing to give it a try at least once! If not the 600 will do.

Been thinking on that very subject fer some long while now and still don't have the answer, thus haven't made any attempts to get it made for me yet. I ain't ever gonna win anything so I'll have to make my own arrangements for it.

BUT for sure it will be a Remington. Maybe a model 7 or more likely a model 700. That's the easy part for me. No contest.

I can even narrow down the stock choice to one made of that gray laminated wood called by different names depending on who's making the stocks.

The metal would be stainless cuz I think that's what a real hunting gun should be made of.

That's about as far as I can say for certain however. I'm torn between a standard configuration like the current LSS Mtn. Rifles or a full stock gun like the Model 7 MS.

If I were to go with the full stock gun it would become my primary if not only deer rifle and I'd want it to be use able in thick cover for pretty much anything I might ever hunt. I must admit for such use a .358 Win. would rate high on the list. Still there are others still in contention.

The other configuration is even more up in the air for me. Maybe a long action in .280 AI or maybe a .257 AI which I almost made arrangements for once.

Because I continue to vacillate I still haven't made any attempt to have one made.

Dakota Safari chambered in .404 Jeffrey.  Why?  Because it would fill out my rifle battery on the heavy end, and edge me one step closer to my dream of taking a big brownie and a cape buff.

At this point, all I can do is dream, but it's a good dream! :-)

Finding myself getting older no matter how hard I try not to, I would have to opt for a light weight mannlicher stock made with kevlar and having the new Remmington recoil pad.  I would also like a CRF action made in stainless steel.  The action would have to have an attached recoil lug (non-remington).  I would want a single set adjustable trigger and a Sako style scope mount system.  I would prefer a Leupold (great warranty) 2 x 7 compact scope.  It would be nice to have the flush mounted sling studs I once had in a Browning 1895 rifle. To keep weight down, a slim carbon encased 22 inch barrel with a recessed crown and no iron sights. I would also want a mauser 98 style ejector.

My hunting area has everything from antelope to elk.  I also have to worry about running into a hungry/upset grizzly bear.  The caliber has to be powerful enough to protect me from a bear, slim and fast enough to travel 300 yards with a 3" high 100 yard sight in, and not punish the shoulder with excess recoil.  I believe that the 338-06 would do the job extremely well.  (O K, it's not a big bore-sorry)

wow, C F, you must do some serious long range shooting to sight in 3 feet high at 100 yards..
Anyways, I hope you do win that gun, it would probably cost a few thousand bucks to get one built. :D

Ramrod,
I have corrected my error - thanks.

It would cost a lot of money, but thank God, we don't have to pay for our dreams.

A Double side-by-side Holland & Holland in 700NE or 600NE (Either would be fine)
As long as the following caveat applies: A lifelong supply of cartridge brass or ammo.
There is no way I could afford even a 20 round box of ammo that costs around DOUBLE what I spent for my CZ550 Magnum 458 Lott.
The last I knew, 700NE rounds were about $75 EACH !
Which IMHO is an absolute bank-busting scamulation RIPOFF !
Shells for the 30mm gatling nose-cannon on the Air Force A-10 warthog are not only much cheaper, but much more powerful/devastating.
Otherwise I would go for a 585 Nyati or 577 Tyrannosaur on a nice Controlled-feed Mauser Magnum action.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !
