Removing Rear sight
« on: February 03, 2005, 01:32:54 AM »
Has anyone removed a rear sight from their Handi?

I'm talking removing the whole thing, base and all.  Is it brazed, soldered or what?

I'd like to put a larger objective scope on the rifle, low down, but the front bell is striking the rear sight, so something has to be done.  I know I can put taller bases on it, but I'd like to keep the scope as close to the bore as possible.

I put a peep on my 45-70 & took the rear sight off it is screwed onto the barrel so you will be left with a srew hole unless you find a plug. I do not know the size I have to find one as well. Maybe someone else will know its thread size. I think you have to take out the sight adjustment screw then remove the hinge pin to get at the base screw attached to the barrel.

Hope this helps

Yes, that is correct, drive the pin out of the sight with a 1/16" pin punch, remove both screws.

Yep, that did it.

The rear sight is now in my 'spare parts' bag, and the scope is on the gun.

I had to take the adjustment screw out, then drive the pin out to get to the second screw, but it took all of about 15 minutes total (10 minutes to locate my punch set).  I went ahead and removed the front sight while I was at it, so now I've got a clean barrel.  The only thing left to do is remove a little bit of the hammer spur so it doesn't hit the ocular bell, and I'll be in business.
