Recoil pad recommendations
« on: February 02, 2006, 02:56:59 PM »
I just shot some factory and some reloads in a new win. mod. 95 405 win. With a winter coat on it was beareable, sort of. With just a shirt on it was not confortable at all. The factory steel butt plate with protruding screw heads no doubt has something to do with it. This rifle will be a shooter and after a search in Midways master catalog I'm at a loss on which way to go. Anyone here have a suggestion?

Simms recoil pads are great. Also consider a Mercury recoil suppressor.  :D

A Limbsaver, or Pachmyer Decelerator would make a substantial difference in the way your '95 feels. :D

Remove the butt pad and drill a 15/16 hole the depth of the recoil suppressor and slide the Mercury recoil suppressors flush with the stock. The Mercury recoil suppressors come with instructions and you need to follow the instructions to a tee. I drilled my Encore stock and it works great.  :D

nasem, I just did a Mercury recoil suppressors install on my new CZ 550 in 416 Rigby.  I used a 7/8 wood bit. I posted the wrong size in my last post. It was very easy in my opinion. This is the second stock I drilled myself.  :D

limbsaver!!  My 300 mag with 180 grain bullets goin 3050 fps with the limbsaver is more comfortable to shoot then my 308 with with factory loads and a hard rubber pad.
If guns kill people, then I can blame misspelled words on my pencil.

This rifle has a LOP of 13 inches. I ordered a Limbsaver slip on and will see if the extra length is ok. Even though this is going to be a shooter I still hate to start choping on the stock. A replacement stock from Winchester runs over $200.00 and I'm not too excited about that either!!
Thanks for the suggestions.

You guys were right. I just shot the same reloads with the same jacket and there was a world of difference. Then I took the jacket off and fired several shots in a "T" shirt. It is now a pleasure to shoot and the extra inch or so is fine in the LOP.
Limbsaver is the way to go.

Good for you!

I have limb savers on three of my rifles, a 375HH and a Ruger #1 in 45/70, the other is a Rem 700LVSF light varmint rig in 223 that came with the limbsaver attached.  They help a lot!
