Found a nice NIB Colt HBAR for a decent price. But is has 1-7 twist which will only stabilize heavier bullets in 223 cal. Can you find plinking ammo in the heavier bullets? What are the advantages/disadvantages in the 1-7 twist?
Other than that it is a good deal on a nice weapon.

Not True! I currently own several Colt's with 1/7 twists, in both 16 and 20 inch lengths. All will shoot 55 gr. M193 loads very, very well. Barrel twist is more dependent on the bearing surface of the bullet in relation to the interior of the bore than it is weight.

If it's what you want, then you can bet your bottom dollar that your going to have a rifle that handles the common, inexpensive 55 grain loads very well. Don't buy off on all of the internet hype that 1/7 twist Colt barrels won't properly stabilize 55 grain projectiles, because it simply isn't true!

Thanks for your input. As a Colt owner how do you rate the AR 15's compared to Bushmaster & other brands?

My experience with Colts is much more extensive than the other brands. About 95% of my exposure to AR-15's is from the law enforcement side of it. As a police armorer, I personally see a very high degree of quality control coming out of the Colt factory. It's very rare to see Colt lemon, however I've been around long enough to know that they almost certainly exist.

I own several personally owned AR15's, and they are all Colt. Call it brand loyalty, but I go with what works, and Colts do.

There are a bunch of people who will laud Bushmaster, Rock River, Olympic, DPMS, etc. as being superior to Colt in one fashion or the other. The bottom line really is that they are all pretty darn good. I do however see Colt owners doing a whole lot better getting their money back out of Colts when they decide to sell or trade.

Thanks again. You have made some solid points. I am strongly leaning towards buying the Colt this weekend. As for re-sale I can 2nd that based on walking the aisles at local gun shows.

Yea, the bottom line is that AR's are a dime a dozen, but Colts seem to hold their value better. I could sell all of mine for more than I paid for them, and I didn't really get a smokin deal on any when I bought them.
