How well does your Handi 22-250 group?
« on: February 04, 2005, 01:46:29 PM »
Tryin to get a handle on how well other folks are able to group with this. I'm havin a real tough time getting tighter than an occasional 1" grp at 100 yds. What ammo does it like the best? I reload- and first posted on the appropriate forum for this help, and was told the handi is not highly accurate. I have a hard time buying that- and would like to bring out the full potential of what this fine gun has to offer. Any notes on the reloading aspect would be most helpful. Many thanks in advance.

:D , Welcome aboard Vlad. All things being in good shape and all screws tightened securely you should get better than that from your 22-250. My .223 shoots less than one inch groups all day. Hopefully some 22-250 shooter/reloader will chime in. And I would think that most 22-250 shooters are reloaders....<><....

Don't worry, handi barrels take some range time or bore polishing to get best accuracy, check out the barrel break in procedure by Varmint Al in the FAQ sticky at the top of the forum list. Expect 150 to 200 rounds down range before best accuracy is found, or polish and get that accuracy much sooner. My .223 Ultra was shooting sub 1/2" in less than 100 rounds, my .204 ruger Handi has less than 20 rounds thru it and group size is 1" at 100yds. It may take some experimenting to find the right ammo, too. The Winchester white box value pack 45gr JHP ammo shoots real well in the .223, it comes in .22-250, also, worth a try. Good luck and welcome aboard! :D

Vlad, since the 22-250 and the .223 share bore size and twist rate, I would recommend bullets weighing less than 55gr which most .223 handis shoot extremely well. There has been only a post or 2 on the 22-250 that I can remember here since it was recently reintroduced, so there aren't many 22-250 handi shooter here. FWIW, there are a bunch of members at Predatormasters than love their Handis and Ultras for long range predator and varmint shooting, mostly in .223, but some 22-250 and 204 rugers.

mine has maybe sixty or eighty rounds through it, and its getting better each time out.   i went to chronograph it last time, but the light was messing up my chrony and i couldnt get a reading.

with 40 grain XTP's and H4895 the groups were originally 1.5 or so, then they progressed to 1.25.   i got similar results from hornady 55 grain bullets with 3031.   however, a box of PMC 55 grain ammo that i bought at the range grouped 1 inch.   it seems to me that this rifle shoots much better when the barrel is warm, but either way its getting better each time out.

i reload with a RCBS two die set (full length resize, no crimp).   maybe i need to crimp?

:D, Welcome aboard Mr Goat, It looks as if your going to be a welcomed addittion to this large and "Handi" cyber group. It appears that at some point in your life you have become afflicted with the enjoyment of shooting and reloading, if you stay around much, and are not yet so affected, becoming a Handiholic is just around the corner, or, you may already be one!!!....<><....
