need accurate load for .223
« on: January 02, 2005, 04:39:58 AM »
hey
i have a cz 527 varmint and im wanting to find an accurate load for this rifle  i was thinking of trying some 55 gr a max bullets and also some ballistic tips maybe with some reloader 10x but i have no idea where to start  shooting factory loads in this rifle it seems to like the 55gr or bigger bullets  the 40 -52 gr bullets bring much wider groups  although i have not tried any premium ammunition it it the white box 55 gr winchester value pack stuff has been the best so far at around  7/8 in  i did try the black hills 52 gr match ammo in it and it shot worse than the winchester at around 1-1/4 in   the federal v shock was about the same so im beginning to wonder where to go from here with it  i know the rifle is capable of tiny groups but im looking for suggestions   mine is the 24 in barrel
thanks for any info

Try 23.0 gr. AA2230 behind a Soeer 50 gr. TNT.  Seat to an OAL of 2.230 in fire-formed military cases.  You will be amazed.

I too currently use BenchMark powder.  It pushes out a 55gr Hornaday SP. I also load a 55gr Nosler BT with BenchMark.  It is a very clean burning powder and my .223 NEF just loves it. Coyotes don't like it at all.....

The 28 grs of W748 powder with magnum primers and a 40 gr Nosler is deadly and very accurate. Its the load I stick with for the 223. I also use a 45 gr HP from remmington (its the short ,fat one) and use W748, magnum primers with 27grs of powder with amazing accuracy from a M700. Both are capable of less tha 1/4 inch groups at 100 yds. Steve 48

What is the twist rate on your CZ? If 1/14 stay with less than 40 grain points, 1/12 you can use 40-52, 1/9 use 55-62, 1/7 use 68 grains.

This is my favorite load:
Hornady 55 gr SP
Win Small Rifle Primer
Win Brass Neck Sized
24.5 grains Win 748 Ball Powder
Most OAL > 2.235 inches seem to give the best performance for me.

The biggest improvement came when I kept the above load but switched to the Hornady from Win bullets, night and day difference in the groups.

Single Shot H&R Ultra:
50 grain V Max and BLC2 in Lake City Cases with Federal or CCI Primers

AR15:
55 grain V Max with 27.5 grains of Varget in Winchester Cases and Fed Primers.  THIS IS A MAX LOAD.  WORK UP TO IT SLOWLY AND SAFELY

By a box of match bullets and use loads out of the books to really see what the rifle can do.

My Savage 110FP will shoot most anything into an inch or less, but will get down to 0.5-0.7" five shot groups with the Hornady 52 gr match bullets and H335 powder.

I'll be testing some 55 Vmax in it soon, using H4895 powder.

21.5gr to 22.5gr of 1680 works good for me. I'm partial to ball powder tho'

The Hodgdon H335 works good too. My Ar's prefer 24.7gr of H335 and my contender likes 25.2gr of 2015.

The ball powders give one more fire ball at the muzzle, but meter out and shoot fine.

My best accuracy was with the AA 2015 @25.2gr and a 55gr amax.

Good luck,
