Front foot catch with Belisles
« on: January 22, 2005, 03:43:16 AM »
I have caught 5 beaver this year by the front foot. That doesn't sound too strange but the particular ones I'm talking about were in belisle 330's. Some were sitting on the bank waiting on me and some had swam to deep water and drowned. Does anyone have a theory on why or how this is happening?

Kenny, how deep are you setting your 330s?
I had this happen many times with the montgomery(600)which was the first 280.The beaver were trying to get over them,I swithched to 330 and always put 2 cross sticks in anX over the top of my traps--no more problems.
I at least, half submerge all my 330s --even when I trapped in your country.

Some have been on deep water runs and others have been on crossovers and some half submerged. I may be wrong but I don't think the depth they are set has anything to do with it. I've never had this happen in a bridger but I have had a few more bridgers tripped without a catch. Whatever it is, I think the reason you don't see it alot in other brands is because they won't hold them by the front foot.

All my Body Grip traps from 120's up are Belisle's.And you know I neaver cought a beaver by the foot ,till I started useing them. The other traps were just sprung.Belisle traps are holding the beavers, otter and everything else that gets a foot in them.
Back to your question-I think the beaver are "trying" to go over them. You might want more covering or larger dive sticks over your traps.

Bvr by front foot

I caught a 66 # female bvr by front foot in a  regular 330 conibear  that was baited  in  6 feet of water once... i was really surprised as bvr usually go head first into conibear to chew off bait... how she got caught by one front foot and stayed in reg conibear surprised me.... this trapping game  always throws a twist into things as years go by....
