just got in from the range today....

.shot a soft lead 215 gr.bullet out of my 50 huntsman with green sabot behind 100 gr. rs powder,,,,it shoots good.what will it do to deer????i know what 210 gr. jacket bullets do, but pure lead??? its a cheap way to target pratice that 4 sure.......jb

I mold a 44 cal 200 grain and 240 grain bullets to use in sabots. Myself and most of the guys I hunt with use them for hunting. They work very well and most use the 200 grain ones in various muzzleloaders. I have a huntsman and an encore and both shoot the 240 very well. I use hornady green sabots and a .429 bullet. They load and shoot well as i stated. Round balls that have killed many things over many years are made of lead and they have functioned very well at much less velocity than a modern muzzle loader can push a bullet. Just food for thought.

I can't speak to the slugs, but the patched round ball is a deer killer to beat the band. I have killed 14 deer and hogs with the .50 patched round ball. This ball weighs 175 grains.
In every case I made pass through shots on broadside lung shots. Never had an animal go more than 60 yards.
I know the .45 lead round ball is also a very good deer killer. I would imagine the .45 lead slug would work great.

jbtazgrabber, I use pure lead in my 45-70 shiloh sharps. On deer it does a great job. I do not think you will have a problem at all.

Some years ago a small family business was started to make all-lead bullets just for muzzle loading. I think hey can answer your questions and you can decided for yourself!

I have used several varieties of pure lead bullets, all from Precision Rifle, on deer. All performed well. Good penetration, great expansion. Even at close range I had weight retention.

thanks guys i have killed plenty of bambi with a round ball,,,but i also lost a few...cant find in high grass......this was first year with sabots,killed so fast i couldnt belive it...i didnt even bring out the center fire rifles during gun season......just didnt know if they would expand<soft lead bullet> thank ill try on praire dogs in june :-D :-D :-D thanks again...jb
