One gun for hunting.

mstake,

I have my own prejudiced feelings on the one gun angle.

I personally shoot the S&W 500 and use open sights. I can consistently hit the man sized target at 300 yards. Takes a little practice.

If you are looking strictly at the .44 mag, you haven't stated your reason so its hard to look at this discussion objectively.

Further, if you are settled on the .44 then the field is limited and I would have to suggest the T/C contender or Encore in a 10-14" barrel. The unit is capable of being refitted with other barrels once you figure out that there are better choices than the .44 for hunting. You can expand on the type of hunting you are doing (small to large game and distances). You can also enjoy the accuracy of the T/C. You can work with your hand loads until you reach higher performance in the single shot by seating the bullets out further. The downside is the single shot. I don't really see it as a downside if I'm taking game with only one shot!

Any ole how, I hope you have the best of luck with the new gun.

First off I'd like to say Welcome to GBO to Smoky Mountain Red!

Now for my two cents.  If you've got your heart set on a .44 I'd check out :
Ruger Bisley Hunter
Super Redhawk
Redhawk (w/ scoe rings)

Go to the Taurus forum and read about Graybeards experiences with them before putting any of your hard earned cash down for one.  Before his last two from them, I really considered them myself.  If he has trouble getting them to do something about a gun, a regular joe schmo like myself probably don't have a chance at getting them to fix a problem.

I'd also echo the guys that recommend the T/C's.  You can have your 44mag and a different barrel for varmint hunting.  If you get a Contender or a G2, you can even run a rimfire cartridge w/out having to have a custom barrel made.

Another option would be to have a Bisley grip frame put on your .357mag.  You could buy a whole gun w/a Bisley grip and swap parts, or you can order a kit from Brownell's.  You should also be able to put Hogue overmolded grips on the .357 w/out changing the grip frame.

Just my  :money: !
