Accuracy? Guide gun, 45/70
« on: January 12, 2005, 03:34:24 PM »
My new purchase of a Marlin 1895GS was a few days ago. Unless the weather gets unusually warm soon, it'll be 6-8 weeks before I'll get to the range again.

I picked up some Oregon Trail 350g cast bullets to play around with. Anyone use this bullet?

Was just wondering.....What kind of accuracy have you been getting at 100yds with this rifle....using iron sights?

I realize asking a question like this is like asking a fisherman how big his fish was....so, just give it to me straight!

Hogship --

The Oregon Trail LaserCast 300g and 350g bullets are two of my favorites.  The only problem I've had with them is that I can't get acceptable accuracy when I try to push them too fast.

Using the Oregon Trail 350g, CCI 200 primers, and Starline brass @ 2.095", COL @ 2.52", Lee crimp:

13.5g HS-6, 1091fps, 3 of 4 in 0.96" at 50 yards, 4x scope, 7.4fps SD

I cant speak on any cast bullets but I have been able to get very good accuracy with the 405gr Rem JSP and H322 @ 1800fps.  I can easily keep my shots into 2" groups with the ghost ring sights and 1 1/4" with the scout scope.  I would definately get either a the XS sights or the Wild West Guns ghost ring sights.  I have the XS systems sights and really like them.

Coyote Hunter....

Where are you getting your reloading data? My Oregon Trail reloading manual is about 3-4yrs old....maybe this is why I'm not showing data for their 350gr bullets with HS-6. My manual doesn't have data for the 300gr bullets at all....I guess this bullet was introduced after my manual was printed.

1091 fps is pretty slow, you're right. Since I want to shave a little of the recoil, I'll avoid max, but looks like you are at the starting velocities for the other powders listed. If that's what it takes for good accuracy, I guess I'll find out for sure on the load work up. I'm not too worried about it, if that's the case, though.....we ARE talking about a very short range rifle in the first place.

That looks like a real nice set-up you've got there. At this time, I don't plan on using anything but the iron sights.  The XS ghost ring sights were on my 1895GS hours after I got it home! Since I haven't shot my guide gun yet, I don't know how well the XS sights will work for me, but they do look pretty good aiming at the wall!

I think you will find the GG to be very accurate. I shoot the Hornady 300 gr JHP. In the last two Ranch Dog postal matches I shot a .711 and a .762 inch 5 shot group at 100 yards with the GG. It did have a Leupold 1x4 scope. Take your time when you work up the loads and I believe you will find the GG hard to beat for accuracy.

Accuracy story

Last week I invited some of my fellow club members and trap shooters a chance to shoot my Guide Gun. The targets were clay pigeons at 75 yards. Ammo was Ultramax cowboy ammo, 405gr at unknown velocities. Added to the mix was my handload of a 405gr hardcast LBT bullet with a charge of Hogdon 4198.

The first shooter was apprehensive due to the size of the cartridge, he hit a clay on his 2nd shot, his first was into the berm, just for fun. The next 2 shooters hit nothing but the berm but were very gun shy, they thought I was pulling their leg regarding the recoil of the Guide Gun. They were pleasantly surprised. Now it was my turn with my gun and my ammo. Note, I had just shot the worst trap scores of my life about 10 minutes before. 1st shot, broken clay at 75 yards offhand. 2nd shot, broken clay at 75 yards. Best comment, maybe we should find a trap load for that gun. :)  All shooters loved the gun even before I introduced them to the Buffalo Bore ammo. Perhaps I redeemed myself as a shooter hitting those 2 clays offhand at 75 yards.  The Guide Gun was stock except for a sling.

Testimony for the accuracy of the Guide Gun? Sure. Rookie shooters and rookie re-loader still hitting 2 inch targets at 75 yards off-hand.

Edited, targets were standard trap clays. Whatever they measure is what we were shooting at.

hogship,
I think your going to find that your GG shoots better than it ought to.   Mine shoots better than a lot of bolt actions.  And from what I see on some of the web sites, others have the same experience with theirs.  I've used both cast and jacketed bullets, but have settled on Rem. 405g JSP's with Re7 for my "one does all" load.
Hope you enjoy your new one.
Best,

Part of the group now...my wife and her folks gave me a Guide gun this weekend for my birthday!
I love it!!!!

I'll post results as soon as I work up some loads for it, and get to the range.

Mine does exceptionally well with the 300 grain Nosler Partition hand loads...with open sites at 50 yards...even with my bad eyes...I can keep it to around 1-1/2...and scoped...it will put them all day long well under an 1" at 100 yards...and my Cast Performance 405 WLNGC will group them close to an inch as well...it's a great gun...
