Hi,
I just got off the phone with Pat a Lee Precision. He said he would make another run of those moulds,no problem . The number of 25 is significant because if they make 25 or more they waive the 100.00 set up fee. So if any of you are interested let me know and we'll see how many takers we get . If nothing else the 100.00 is easier to take split 10 ways or so.

It's the standard 255 grain two groove .45 bullet mold from LEE, modified to have only one groove....REALLY DEEP AND WIDE! Imagine this one with only one big groove:

After this weekend I will be on the road for the next 8 of 9 days, after that I will tally up what we have got and put in the order. I know Midway sells Lee 6 cavity moulds for 35.00 so I figure about that plus the set up fee if we need it. When I get back I will send everyone who responds to this a personal message to get a commitment . I'll check with Lee at that time to see how much they need up front,If it isn't too bad, Ill take care of it and we'll be in business!

Hmm. So why is this one BIG lube groove important to you guys if it is otherwise the same as their other one? Is it for use with black powder as opposed to smokeless?

BTW gang, I'm planning on writing to LEEs President, John Lee, and suggesting that the company consider a line of molds specially designed fer Black Powder Cartridge pistol rounds. I think that they would a profitable item for the company. There is an increasing demand for such bullets in CAS, and they would have applications in smokeless loads too. If you would like to see LEE such a line, I'd suggest that ya'll drop a note to John telling him what you think. Contact info can be found at http://www.leeprecision.com/ The more folks who write to him and express an interest, the more likely that LEE will would seriously consider making such molds as a standard production item.

This won't help those of us who are looking fer our PRS bullet NOW, but I'm looking at the future and those who will be coming into our game in years to come! The easier it is to buy what they need off the shelf, the more likely it is that they will enter the DARKSIDE    8)

It might be a good idea to post a heads up on the SASS wire that another batch of these molds may be made if there is enough interest .

Yo...
Sounds like a good place for me to make my first post. The PRS bullet was designed for black powder pistol. It was designed for rifle use. The problem was that the BP bullets in existance were never designed for rifle use so 2 small lube rings were usually sufficient. So, Slim got the idea of the overkill lube ring. It works like a charm too. While it is not as accurate as the original its based on, its close enough for government work, or in this case, CAS work. Ive been experimenting with the round for a couple months now, though at below 0, its slow going.
If you shoot 45 in rifle and you want to shoot BP without a hassle, give this one a try...

Add me to the list. Just obtained a Marlin in .45 Colt, and plan to shoot Frontiersman. That means I can't use my favorite Lee bullet, the .452-255 RF, because of those dagnabbed microscopic lube grooves. The PRS mould is just the ticket. i have e-mailed Lee asking them to catalog the PRS.

:D   Hey Ho Pards!

I am the PRS in the PRS boolit.  Big Deal!?  Great Bullet!  In the thread above I see a photo displayed of the Lee 452-255-RF and the caption of imagine.  If any of you guys have a camera for posting such pics, then I would be happy to supply the PRS bullet samples to you so that you can post a pic of the real Hatfield; perhaps one lubed and one naked.  Its an awesome sight!  It is different form the "mother" bullet in several ways.

If ya want a posting of my experiences and rammblings that let me to create that bullet; then I can do that here too.  Quite frankly, its a whole lot of beginner's luck.  For that bullet to have turned out as well as it did and to have such good balance is truly remarkable to me.  It has two drawbacks that I can think of right off the bat.  1.  It is a bit tedious to place squarely on a cartrige case that is only belled minimally -- this due to its non-beveled square flat base.  Such a squared base is necessary in my opinion for optimal BP performance and the design should not be changed.  I suggest you find the amount of belling you can just get by with and use your seating die to just close that belling before crimping with the final die.  2.  Its lube hungry!  If you are paying $3.50 to $4.00 per stick for SPG or other commercial lube, the your cost for lube is gonna be substantial.  I have the solution for that; its PRS lube.  I can post a windy diatribe about PRS lube too, if'n yall really want.  Emmert's Lube or any well thought out home made BPCR lube will work, but I am kinda partial to the PRS for some reason or another.  Bear in mind, the lonly lube that helps your shooting is that which is used or consumed in the barrel.  Its no good throwing big goobers down range.  PRS lube tends to be consumed and the familiar barrel crown star you like to see may not be impressive with it -- the lube was converted to moisture and anti-fouling. rather than wasted downrange as a mess.

Also, I have NO, repeat NO, financial interest in this bullet.  It is my gift, however small and humble, to fellow shooters of the Holy Black.  I had hoped and hope that Lee markets it directly through its regular distributers so that the price can be more reasonable.  They are NUTS if they continure to ignore our needs and desires.

Keep yer powder dry and yer back to the wall.

Hey Ho Castillion!

I use the PRS in my revolters too!  I did not know they suffered any degrade in accuracy compared to the original, but my shooting ability is likely NOT comparable to yours.  I hope you can get a good write-up out.  If you consider long term accuracy as compared to accuracy of small groups, the PRS may well out perform the original in as few as five shots, maybe less.  Maybe you need the PRS lube, too.

Throw another og on the fire, Pard!

Thanks Pigeon Roost for your insight And bullet design!!! It looks like 8 takers so far. Is anyone else interested???? I doubt we will get to the 25 it takes to waive the fee, but I thought there would be a little more interest!!!!  I will give it a couple of more days and then submit the order. I will probably get a couple of extras just in case, and we'll split up the 100.00 fee by the total number of moulds made. I know I want 2 for myself.

Dennis, are you the one who's taken the bull by the horns and are now running the show getting an order together?

Is it just folks from this site involved or have you surveyed at the SASS Wire also for takers?

Are we talking about  six cavity moulds on this? Do we have some general idea of the cost? I don't shoot BP but might one day so am interested but so far I've just not seen enough info to make an enlightened decision. I know the original order was for six cavity moulds. Can I safely assume that's what we're talking about again? My normal price on a Lee six cavity mould is about $34. Are we talking somewhere in that general ball park plus the custom fee split if necessary?

How many have to be bought to avoid the $100 custom fee?

I'd like to see the R&D process for the .45 boolet, as it was probably used for the PRS/Snakebite .38 Greasewagon too.  How 'bout it?

I did post the PRS bullet story, my PRS lube recipe, and my advice for using the wonderful Lee Commercial 6 cavity molds.  Those long winded rambling are right here on this site under their own captions.  I amnot much of a web navigatior -- so if'n I screwed up, I can clog up this post with it, but that seems kinda cumbersome.

Without the bulk order, I suppose Lee will charge the group 100 dollars plus 50 dollars for each mold.  If my e-mail and private message boxes are any indication of interest from the SASS site, then more folks should be signing onto this deal.

Gentlemen,
Here's the deal. The mould has been ordered. I have already paid the 100.00 set up fee. I spoke with the mould maker and he requested that you NOT call him!!!! He will be making extras I told him he could easily sell another 20. The moulds go for Lees retail of 50.00 each. They are 6 cavity,I am geussing that if you call the secretary and give her your credit card they will make one for you as well. This was done at 8:00 a.m. this morning. Just be sure and tell them that you want the 454 250 rf custom. As I already stated the 100.00 set up is already paid so I don't see why they won't make as many as you guys order. I would have done this differently but the only other way was for me to pay for all of them up front(way too expensive).
Tell them you want the same mould as ordered by Dennis Holmbeck
Regards,
Dennis
