wife's gonna kill me...
« on: February 02, 2005, 11:50:51 AM »
:D  Howdy all!

Well, gone and done it...what a pandora's box I have now opened! Ordered first t/c today. Got a SS encore frame coming in a few days. My first thought on a tube is a 44mag 12" with open sights, since I already have a few wheel guns in that caliber. I mostly stand hunt over fields or in the woods and don't like to take shots over 100 yrds or so, and was thinking about a peep sight on the rear. Anybody use one on theirs? How do you like it at distances of up to 100 yds?

Or, should I get a 45/70 to go with the marlin, or a .308 to go with the model 100 or a 30/06 to complement the model 70 feather.... :-D

I need help already, and ain't even got the thing yet :?

barrel for Encore

My first Encore barrel was a 15" .308----it will do almost anything ----it is the most versatile one you can get for hunting nearly all North American game animals-----(I do have a few other Encore barrels just because I have the sickness which I carried over from my Contender addiction)----but you will not go wrong with the .308.   pg

I have the 12" SS .44 Magnum and have found that with an upper medium load of IMR 2400 it shoots very comfortably.

I will hunt with it as I grow more skilled at shooting it. I always thought it would hard to shoot a .44 Magnum but now really like it.  First time I shot the caliber I was barely on the paper at 25 yards--now I am making good groups out to 100 yerds off the rest and with the scope I've put on it.

Good luck and let us know how it is working out.

I like the 45-70 myself.   :-)

Ever give much thought to the 7-08?  Seems like a lot of guys have a lot of good things to say about it.  Just food for thought.

I had installed a peep on one of my 14" tubes, but hated the setup.  Went to a Williams target-style rear blade, which I love.  All others are equipped with scopes ranging from 2x to 3x-12x.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

I have the 45-70 and it shoots great and is fun to shoot. I shoot 300grn Sierra JHP's in it and have taken one doe last year in Oklahoma.   Sure hits with authority.   I have a 44 but haven't shot it yet. Not sure I will, may trade it to my neighbor that wants to trade me a 308 brl for it.

It's a good thing barrels are easier to sneak into the house than whole guns!!  :-D

I'm leaning heavily toward the .308 scoped 4x for hunting over fields, and a .44 12" open sights for stands in the woods.

Sure hope the warmer/drier months get here quick....I'm gonna need some quality range time pretty soon!

Thanks for all the replies!!  Great forum!!

 My wife put a stop to any new guns but I think I found an angle.  I came home the other day and said I found a cute little carbine that would be perfect for my grandson when he gets old enough to hunt and she didn't raise a stink at all.  Now 4 grandsons times 4 or 5 guns each should keep her off my back for a good long while.
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

I feel guilty! I just got finished telling her we have to curb our spending. Then I find a .375 winchester barrel for my contender. I've always wanted one and it's a Bullberry to boot.
 I had it sent to work so she wouldn't know.

Goose,
You may be happier with a 2X or a good variable. Unless you have a very good rest all the time the 4X can be a bit tough to shoot off hand if needed.

Duffy....Yup, may have to re-think the 4x option...picked up a leupold at my local gunshop and noticed it was really hard to keep the crosshairs anywhere close to steady on target with the eye relief being what it is. Seemed like the 2x had a little more forgiveness in the jumpy department. I think I'll go with a 2x burris for starters and see how it pans out.
I sure wish that frame would hurry up and get here...weather is supposed to be purty all week here......

Flyfisher...I have never owned anything in a 7mm chambering, but have read many positive things about the 7mm/08 in t/c's. One of the advantages it would seem to have is availability in shorter barrel lengths (12"). That appeals to me as far as portability goes. Noise and flash don't really bug me as I am already half deaf as it is! :-D  Any other advantages over a .308?? ( I was thinking .308 simply because I have rifles in that caliber...and I don't reload  )

The 45/70 sounds like fun...may put that one on the b-day wish list!!
