Pistol Iron Sight Options?
« on: March 27, 2005, 06:38:48 PM »
Have a Ruger Mk II and a Ruger Blackhawk. Just love shooting them.
Had eye surgery a few years back now iron sights are hard to pick up and focus. All my rifles naturally wear scopes, I'd rather not scope my pistols.
What type of sights are out there to help?

A lot depends on the use to which the pistols are put.  the little tasco dot soghts are great but they may no longer be available as tascos.  they are still available thru Brownells under a different name.  They are tiny, and battery life is tremendous.  they will withstand the shock of living in the rear sight dovetail of a 1911 45.  Drawback?  they are a bit costly... No eye relief and auto brightness control.. They weigh less than 1/2 OZ and are less than 1 inch tall...

Try some of the various fiber optic sights out there. I put them on a 45 auto and my 45 Colt Bisley. I can see the front sight so much better now. My brother put a set on his Win. 94 and loves them. Hope this helps. (If you need help with the Blachawk call Tim Thompson @ 662 398-5001. He does excellant gunsmithing.)

Both are for hunting.
My 22 is carried mainly on the trap line and the 45 as a side arm while deer and bear hunting.

I'm trying to stay away from mounting any type of scope/red dot.
My father has a red dot on his Ruger MK II, fun for plinking but it feels unweildly.

I haven't found specific replacement front sights for either pistol and was told by the local shop they didn't make any. I don't claim they know everything so the search continues.

Brownells has several sights available in fiber optic specifically for the pistols you mentioned.  Their catalogue is available online..
