called NEF regarding gun shooting low
« on: January 28, 2005, 02:45:10 PM »
I was still 4 inches low at 50 yards with 80 -100 grn and 300 gn sst/xtp with rear ramp sight all the way up.  I called NEF and have to say the lady that I spoke to did not seem very helpfull.  Her answer is "there must be something wrong with the gun".  She did not suggest a higher rear sight or lower front one.  she did say I can send it to them - but who wants to pay all the shipping to NEF?  I went to a gun shop and he pointed out how high the front sight is compared to other muzzleloaders.  Even though it is a williams sight, there is no way to lower  the front one at all.  I decided to play around with the sight and moved the back ramp  all the way back to the next to last scope rail tapping.  It will then be on the raised portion of the barrel where the bp screws in.  I even like the sight picture better as the two green ones are now blurred so that I do not get distracted trying to focus on both them and the front one.  I can still tell if they are aligned with the front one.  I will test this out soon and post how it works.  The lady did give me a supposed model number for a williams peep that fits the gun  #17778 wgrs.  I went to the williams site and no such model listed.  anyone know where to get one or another good adjustable peep that fits?  Thanks

JDBE:

If you want send me an email to brpc@knology.net and I'll try to help you.

I think it was very generous for you to offer to weld the modification to the breech plug tools for folks.

jdbe,

Sorry to hear about your situation.  If you contact your local gun smith, he should be able to fix you up with a shim placed under the rear sight.  If not, the good people at Brownells should be able to get you one.  They would also have longer screws if needed.  This would be the least expensive way to go. IMHO.

jdbe,

Williams makes the rear slide/blade sight in a few different heights, might give them a call on their 800-530-9028.

The Fire Sights come in 1/4" and 5/16" heights. The regular WGOS comes in four heights.

3/16" adjustable .320-.420
1/4"   adjustable .382-.482
5/16" adjustable .445-.545
3/8"   adjustable .507-.607

Hope that helps, I don't know what blade comes standard with the Huntsman/Sidekick but a call to Customer Service (H&R/NEF) might get you somewhere if you know what you are looking for after calling Williams and getting their input. Another option is a shorter front sight, but let Williams know where your gun is shooting and they will be able to help.

I have a 2005 Williams Catalog and price sheet and all of their sights ARE NOT on their website. Request a catalog and it will be there in less than a week. The H&R/NEF Customer Service did give you the correct code #17778 for the WGRS-H&R Peep Sight. You may or may not need a new front sight, but Williams should be able to tell you that. It says for the H&R Buffalo Classic to use a .570W front sight.

jdbe,

I just checked my Brownells cat.  They want 23.95 for the Replacement Fire Sight Rear Slide/Blade.

Part # 962602190---5/16"

Let us know how you make out with H&R/NEF
