New 45 cal pistol from S&W
« on: February 07, 2005, 04:47:14 PM »
Well they were tired of resting on their laurels and have come out with a new one.  The 460 S&W magnum.  Ammo made by Corbon and Hornady.

Uses bullets from 200gr to 385.  The 200gr leaves the muzzle of a 7 1/2" REVOLVER barrel at 2345fps!!!!

The 385 is right about 200fps as well.  The 200gr load has as much energy as the 500 S&W.

The 200gr load also has more energy at 300yds than the 44 Mag at the muzzle.

Big article in the new issue of rifle shooter magazine.

BTW this thing is loaded to SAAMI specs of 65,000 PSI!!!!

quick
Don't know that and it obviously didn't mention that in the article.  It was developed by the same guy at S&W that made the 500.

It is based on the 500 frame but that frame had to be reenforced to handle these pressures.

The interesting thing of the article is due to the design of the compensator, the writer said it had about the same recoil as a medium weight 44 mag.

Said the trajectory of the 200gr load gives PBR of 250 yds on a deer size target.  VERY impressive for a revolver.

Does NEF already make a barrel in 460 S&W?  They just call it the 45/410?  I don't know if it would be safe to use in these barrels, just suggesting the possibility that it should chamber, and has the same bore diameter...

Welcome aboard! :D  You're thinking of the 500 S&W which is a new offering from H&R and still not available that anyone has reported. The 45/410 is an old offering and no relation to the new 460 S&W.

Thanks for the reply, no I was thinking that since apparently you can shoot 454 brass (and 450 Mongo) in the 45/410 barrel and that the 460 is an extended 454 (longer that 454, shorter than the mongo) that at least the dimensions for chamber and bore would be right for the cartridge.  The pressure, though, I don't know about.  Thanks,

Pete

IIRC, the 45/410 uses an SB1 frame, certainly won't handle the 65,000psi of the 460S&W.

I would seriously think that they would make the 460S&W fatter or belted or something to prevent it from being chambered in another caliber that could cause some serious injury when fired.....like a .410 shotgun....

i know it's .451 vs. .458, but the handi already is chambered in the 460 s&w vxr "super."
it's something called the 45-70, and with syn stock it only weighs about 8 ounces more than the pistol.
200 grain bullet at 2,330 fps.
