I disagree, I think that a 2x would be pleanty of scope for groundhog hunting out to 200 yrds. The more power you use the harder it is to find your target, and with handgun scopes you have a very small field of view anyway. I put my first scope on a handgun in 1969 and have done a far amount of hunting with them over the years. The fixed power 2X scopes are all I will use on gun that I carry while walking or driveing because they are somuch ltier and faster to get on the target with. If your setting a stand and have a good rest where weight and size is not a problem then a good variable is nice. If you do this always keep your scope on the lowest power. If the deer is far enough out that you want more power you`ll have time to set it up, but if one is spotted close you will not have time to turn it down.
