Round Ball
« on: February 08, 2005, 12:46:45 AM »
I have been vey successful on deer with inline muzzleloading!
A few years ago my wife bought me a CVA Hawken percussion kit.
Of course I used my inline loads on the kit rifle, and was stunned by the great accuracy...
My issue? I'm not worried about caps, or powder but I'd love to shoot
a deer with a round ball. I'm sure I could figure it out, but many folks here know what they're talking about!
What do I use? Where do I buy lead balls, patches, etc. I got all sorts of
777, and pyrodex, so I would use that. My barrel is 1 /48 twist, and shoots Powerbelts terrific.
Basically, where do I go from here to shoot lead balls.....?

You didn't mention caliber, so I'll toss out examples of what works for me:
.45cal = Hornady .440 ball
.50cal = Hornady .490  "
.54cal = Hornady .530  "
.018" TC Prelubed pillow ticking patches
Targets = 50-60grns Goex 3F  (60-70grns Pyrodex RS)
Deer = 90grns Goex 3F  (110-120grns Pyrodex RS) + Oxyoke wonderwad
"Flintlocks.......The Real Deal"
(Claims that 1:48" twists won't shoot PRBs accurately are old wives tales!!)

I urge you to try the round ball. I hunted for years with a Hawken with 1:48 twist using round ball. It was accurate and was a very good deer killer. Lots cheaper than any other load.
Cabelas has everything you need. If .50 caliber get .490 round balls.
Another good source is Dixie Gun Works. I get my stuff from them. Buy a chunk of pillow ticking and make your own patches. Buy a can of Old Zip patch lube. This is what the old timers used. It is made of mutton tallow and beeswax, it works great.
Aim small don't miss.

I use a .495 ball, 18th pillow ticking lightly lubed with liqid Wonderlube, and 80g of Pyrodex in my 1 in 48" twist Lyman Deerstalker. This load has taken many whitetails, from 12 feet to 110 yards.
