Help me decide between Simmons 44 mag or White Tail Classic
« on: February 01, 2005, 12:25:38 PM »
Simmons 44 Mag 6.5-20x44AO $130  Matte finish
Simmons WTC 6.5-20x50AO  $100    Bumpy matte finish

Besides the exterior finish of the rifles and objective lense size, what's the difference?

And which one is better?  I have an Aetec 3.8-12x44AO scope and love it.  But I need a little more magnification on a new rifle.  How do these scopes stack up?

I have only had the Aetec and Pro- Hunter. The WTC though would be a good buy. Midway has them for 99.00.
shot placement is everything.

Of all the 44 Mag scopes, the 801048 is the most highly recommended at RFC, right up there with the WTC18, but since the 801048 is on sale for the same price as the WTC18, I'd lean towards it. Most all the 44Mags are on sale at Natchez for $100, so I'd get the one that has the features you want.

I have 44 Mags on my 30-06 and .270. No problems with either one of them. Have had the one on the .270 for three years and the 30-06 two years. Took two bucks with the 06 this year. Never had any experience with the WTC, but am looking at a .223 now and will most likely by another of the 44's. Got mine from SWFA

I just put the 44Mag 6.5 x 20 Mil-Dot Wide Angle on my 45-70 with the 32" barrel...plenty of eye relief too!!  I like it alot! I sighted it in at 100 yards high on a 6" bull... moved over to 300 yards....shot one round dead on holding on the bull and could see the hole about 24" or so low......it matched up with the second dot down on the reticle while holding on the bull.....Boom...3 more shots holding on the second dot down and it put a nice group around the 6" bull....

I guess I won't be much help, I have a WTC 6.5-20x50 on my Handi .223 Bull Barrel and love it. It has never given me any problems. However I have heard great thigs about the 44 Mag series also.......so.......I just don't know. I do know one thing though, you won't go wrong with either of them....<><....

The two things that really impress me concerning Simmons scopes are their clarity and the life time warranty.
I have the 44Mag on my .243 and it is outstanding.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

I have two WTC's and one 44Mag. The 44Mag is the 1044 model (3x10). The WTC's are very big scopes you will need high or extra high rings to clear. I the the 44mag is a little edge on clarity (but not buy much) at the same power as the WTC. The AO  has to be set just about at the right range. But this might be with all scopes with an AO. But if you have the time to adjust it it works almost like a range finder, sorta. Most of the time I run the WTC on the lowest setting I only go to the higher powers when punching paper. 14 seems to be the best for me any higher and I start to wiggle to much. I dont think that its the scope I think that its me. I was going to buy another WTC but I think Im going to get another 1044. I dont need that much scope for the gun Im going to put it on. Either one is a good scope for the price. But if I was going to get another high power scope I wouldnt think twice about getting another WTC.

I just temporarily mounted my WTC18 6.5-20x50 on my .280 rem with high burris sig zees, there's plenty of room at both end, if using much lower rings, the power ring would interefere with the hammer. High sig zees are .420" high.

I have the WTC on my Win70 coyote.  I also got it from Midway or roughly 100 bucks.  I will have to check to see if they still have that sale and maybe get another one for a future barrel

I have the 6.5-0 WTC on my 270, and 243 and all work superbly.  I opted for the 6.5-20 44 mag for the 32" 45-70 due to the higher recoil.  My father uses the WTC on his High Wall 45-70 with no complaints.  I believe both are high quality scopes and you can't beat the price and warranty of Simmons, it's all I own.

I put a Simmons 44mag on my .270 Handi.  It's the 3.5-10x44 with the duplex reticle.  I'm very satisfied.  It's held up to cold and rain well (no fogging) and has held zero for the last 18 months, with regular shooting.  I also used it to assist in taking my first deer this season.  I put the Simmons 4-12x40 ATV on my 204 Ruger Handi.  I haven't had a chance to really test the ATV, but it also seems well made, and it is bright and clear.  I really don't think you can go wrong either way.

good luck,

cricman

I visited with the factory (Simmon's) and they stated that the White Tail Classic 6.5 by 20 is the best scope they have and there will not be anymore made. Its a darn shame because they were made in Japan. They really are good optics for the price. I have 3 of them. Buy them while you can. They won't stand up to a large caliber rifle (338-06). Steve 48

The WTC18 is made in the Philippines, not Japan.....And the OEM, Asia Optical, IIRC, is making them for SWFA and Midway whenever they order them as they have been available off and on over the years since Simmons discontinued them. SWFA and Midway have been out of them more than once in the last year, but they are available again now due to the OEM production of this scope.

stiff neck:  I just received my WTC 6.5X20 from Midway today.  I did a lot of research on this site and others before ordering a scope.  I feel pretty good about the choice I made based on the advice I saw here.  Haven't mounted it on a rifle yet, but so far am impressed with the clarity and light gathering ability.  I'm waiting for my .204 Ultra Varmint to come in so I can slap it on and throw some lead.

I ordered the 44 Mag 801048 last week.  It should arrive any day.  It was a close decision.  I might have to order a WTC just to be sure...  8)
