Powder or bullet substitution
« on: February 12, 2005, 01:08:33 AM »
How do experienced loaders find info on a load. I'm specifically talking right now about a barnes-x 125/or 130 loaded with varget powder? I find numerous load with varget powder but not the right bullet. Barnes sent me some info for their bullet with no varget powder. What I've been doing is finding a varget load with a bullet of really close b.c. numbers and going from there. It appears some powders are somewhat close to others. Is there some way to check and see if some powders are interchangeable. It looks like varget and imr.4064 are real close. So, are you guys screaming,"NO YOU IDIOT"!!!. Or do people do that?? Thanks, Kelly

IMO, the best thing you can do is send an e-mail to help@hodgdon.com, letting them know what you want to do. I suggest you include the caliber of the cartridge you want to develop this load for. Mike Daly always responded promptly on my questions. Good luck, jd45.

In the case of Barnes bullets you simply must buy their loading manual.  There is some published data from other sources, but the Barnes book is the only reliable one I know of.  Barnes bullets have different pressure characteristics than conventional bullets. Do not use data for other bullet with Barnes bullets.

I should have said "Barnes X bullets". Barnes makes conventional bullets too.
