Hello. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend. I took my just acquired used 336 (.30-30) out to the range for the first time. The good news is it shot very well. Decent groups at 100 yards with the factory open sights. The action and trigger are very smooth and have a great solid feel to them.
The bad news is the rifle would not eject spent cartridges. It very readily "extracts" them from the chamber, pulling them straight back. There is nothing however to push the spent casing sideways and out of the ejection port.
I took the rifle home and took it apart. It appears the entire ejector spring is missing. I found replacement springs listed at Brownell's.
My question is do I only need this spring? Are there any fasteners or other parts I need to hold the spring in place? It appears to me the spring rests in a slot in the receiver. There appears to be a "pin" that locates or holds the spring in place through a hole in the receiver. Other than that, is it only the bolt that holds the ejector in place? When I remove the bolt for cleaning does the ejector spring simply "fall out" and need to be placed back in when assembling?
Any advice is appreciated. I'm trying to determine if this is a simple drop in part or if I likely need to have a 'smith look at it.
Thanks!
