Newbe question..
« on: February 10, 2005, 04:55:04 AM »
I'm thinking about getting a NEF or H&R rifle for groundhogs and wanted to ask if there is a difference in receivers between the Ultra and Handi model rifles?  Been out of shooting for quite a while and never looked at NEF or H&R before.  Hoping to get 13yr old son into it.

Thinking about a Ultra Varmint in .223 to start with.

I have been enjoying reading through some of the posts on this forum from all the members.  Looks like a great bunch of guys.

boudreau,

Good to see you here.  I believe both the handi and the ultra use the same SB2 frame.  The differences are in the barrel and stock configuration.  If I'm wrong, someone will correct me, but I believe this is right.

Welcome aboard! :D  I have both, the differences twix the 2 is not in the frame, the stock on the Ultras are resin laminated and the barrel finish is a little nicer, that's about it. The frames are the same as far as I can tell. The Ultras also come with a longer scope rail that has set screws installed in the overhang part.

:D, Welcome aboard boudreau, the .223 in either the Ultra Hunter or Handi Rifle will do well for you. It is a great centerfire caliber to start with. The H&R .223's are very accurate , if not out of the box than after a little tweaking. Ammo is plentiful and inexpensive and reloading is cheap and easy top get into with a Lee Loader. There is another thread on that going on right now where a member is buying a Lee Loader for $12.99 to start reloading for his .223 with. Look it up and read it. I sya Go for it, just decide if you want a bull barrel or a standard barrel. Standard for walking, carrying and hunting 80%-90% of the time, a bull barrel for bench shooting 80%-90% of the time, IMHO....<><....

Welcome aboard...

One of the differences I've seen...is on the barrel break open lever...on the Ultras it has grooves across it...the regular Handi's don't...also...almost every Ultra I've picked up...it seems like they (NEF) has done a trigger job on them before the left the factory...the same price you pay now...will be larger if you want to pick up a good set of the Laminated checkerd stocks later...with shipping they are over $100.00 for the set...get the Ultra...it's a great little gun...

Thanks to all for the replies.  I couldn't tell if there was a difference between the two models and am glad to here that the receivers are the same and stock and barrels seem to be the differences.  I have to say that until Monday when I stopped at a local gun shop and started looking at varmint guns that shop recommended I also look at H&R/NEF due to my price range I wanted to stay in.  It was at that point I started looking through the catalog and web site and eventually stumbled upon this web site and glad I did.
