H&R ultra hunter-opinions
« on: February 09, 2005, 06:52:00 PM »
How does this rig shake out as far as fit'n'finish, durability, etc.  as compared to, say, a Contender carbine? Is it a decent rifle or does it feel like an economy grade firearm?

No disrespect to H&R owners, I've never handled one and am relying on pics.  I'm thinking about picking one up (.243) for my 11 yr. old but I'd like something that will still be around for his kids.

Thanks in advance,
RC

I looked at both today at a nearby shop. All I can say is pretty is as pretty does. I think the H&R is a lot better buy for the buck.
If you want something that has a really nice blue job and fancy walnut stock you'll have to go with the T/C. If you want a sturdy centerfire rifle that will last forever I'd go with the H&R.
I had a T/C a long time ago and one thing that always bothered me was that if you cock the hammer on it and then let it down because you changed your mind and didn't take the shot, you then have to break the action down before the hammer will cock again. It might not seem like a big thing but if you're thinking about something else at the time it could ruin your day.
I have 2 H&R shotguns at present and am about to take the plunge into the world of centerfires myself.

How does it compare to the contender...your best bet is to go somewhere that has an Ultra and hold it...they are 2 totally different rifles...and handle totally different. Will it be around for your grandkids???if you take care of it it will...is it as nicely blued and as pretty...not really...but looks isn't what makes these rifles attractive...it's  the cost factor...and the realization that you can get much more from a Handi...than you ever will with a Contender or a Encore...and if you want to spend a-lot...you can...and have just as pretty of stocks blueing and different chamberings as with the Contender...that is entirely how deep your pockets are...but...you don't have to...if you don't want to...

On the new TC"s they have changed the hammer thing. You can now uncock it and recock it without opening the action again. I lve them both. The Handi and the TC. However since I ain't rich its the handi's for me.
shot placement is everything.

You can't get Contenders in high pressure cartridges ie: .243, .270, .308, .30-06.  I don't like the Encore, just does not feel right.  Fit and Finish?  Can't beat the TCs.  But unlike the TCs if i scratch one of my Handi's I don't get upset.  Also they take one heck of a beating, and come back for more.  I carry mine on the handlebars of a motorcycle, 4-wheeler, or on the rear of a snowmachine.  Mine is subjected to temps from 114 degrees in west Texas, to -30 degrees here in Alaska, still shoots when the trigger is squeezed.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

tuffcity I got my grandson a 243 handi youth model when he was 9. He is 11 now and has 6 deer with that little rifle. You won't go wrong by buying one for your kid. It is reliable and tuff. No it doesn't have the fit and finish of a TC but I don't think there is that much difference in reliability. Both are good guns.

My Ultra 25-06 is 8+ lbs. with scope. Doesn't feel like a economy gun. I don't think I will wear it out in my lifetime. Go for it.

If I had children even remotely interested in shooting and hunting, I would not hesitate one second to buy them an H&R/NEF product.

My 12 year old niece has expressed some slight interest in my gun and hunting hobby...all is not lost.

Both my NEF 45/70 and Hornet are around 14 years old and have had hundreds of rounds put through both with no problems; and a lot of game on the table.  Just had to replace the scope on the 45/70; finally gave up, but I like the rifle enough that I just spent a fair bit of money to put  one of those semi-finished stocks on it even though it's an older Handi.  Got an ol' H&R Topper in 12 guage with the barrel cut down to 18" that rides in my truck with me, and gets used in close rabbit cover and when I'm just kicking around in the woods.  It's taken it's share of game also and never asked for much in return.   Now that cougars are moving back into the area its a light carrying peace of insurance with a lot of close range power that provides peace of mind....just in case kinda thing.  Only thing I'll NEVER do is fire another 3" Mag out of the thing!!!!!  I can't begin to describe the pain that caused.

Thanks for all the input!  I guess the concensus is I can't go wrong with the H&R.   :-)
