Disappointed

I bought a Gamo Shadow 1000 from Wal-Mart for $124. Out of the box I noticed the back sight was broken. I put a scope on it and forgot about it. I took it shooting and noticed the front sight had fallen off. What a POS. The trigger pull is about a mile long too. Save your money for something better. The Gamo is accurate, but it is not made to last.
Go out and get yourself a Concealed Weapons License. I did. :gun4:

ABaker,

There are two things to remember about air rifles and scopes.  Avoid Gamo rifles and Tasco scopes at all cost.  You're money ahead by doing so.  Both are POS and not worth the money.  Personally I would return it to Wal-Mart and get a refund.  Lawdog

Very true! I doubt they will ever notice. I bought a Chinese made Marksman 2004 air pistol from Wal Mart - after a whopping 20 rounds fired the pistol began to malfunction. Took it back and got a refund. Ordered the German made Beeman version and so far it is completely reliable and very accurate.

ABaker,

What is your budget for an air rifle?  There are many out there in the same price range that will work nicely for you without breaking your wallet.  Lawdog

Ok I proved that WalMart does not know what a front sight is, they gave me my money back. Now the search for something better. I can spend somewhere around $200. I was thinking maybe an RWS Diana model 34, or something similar. Something at 1000 fps. I am still not sure what caliber yet, I am in the middle. It will be my Pigeon, and small game rifle. Any suggestions?

suggested air rifles

You might consider the Beeman R9 or BSA Supersport in addition to the RWS 34.  If you're not familiar with spring powered air rifles, there is a trick to shooting them well, and follow through is critical - I haven't mastered it yet with these stronger shooting guns (have a supersport).  Also remember that the spring guns have a double recoil cycle forward and back that eats scopes not designed for air rifles - go with a good air rifle rated scope.  Swift  Premier in 4-12x is popular and some of the Bushnells.  And don't be surprised if the gun doesn't really shoot to 1,000 fps - those ratings are optimistic and based on really light pellets. I have read that the RWS can have a droopy barrel and may need scope mounts that can adjust or compensate for the droop. A drawback of my Supersport is that it has a 13 or 14 mm dovetail scope mount rail that can be a little hard to find modestly price rings for.  BKL makes some good mounts but they don't give them away.  I got good service going straight to their web site.  Good luck.
