Who's been fishing?

Alright, lets hear it boys, the good, bad, and the tasty!  Where've you been fishing, has it been good, and do you have any new tips or advice for the year?  I unfortunately have only been out once, I'm taking a New Testament Greek course up here in St. Paul, MN, two and a half hours north of home in Iowa, and my fishing time is zero, I've only been out chasing northerns with my father in NE South Dakota over Christmas break, had a great time, I love tip-ups with smelt!

OK, this is a good one. My friend and I went out last night at 9:30 PM to try for crappies. We caught a ton of gills and only 2 crappies. The night bite was better than the day bite on some of the lakes around here. What gives, catchin' gills at midnight. Don't they know that there not supposed to bite at night. I have been fortunate this year in that I have been out about 2 dozen times and haven't fished further than 10 minutes from my house and I haven't been skunked yet. I have been able to get some eaters. Not to shabby I would say. I also laugh at the fact that alot of people I know are driving 2 hours away to fish and are getting skunked. I guess sometimes fishin' in your "backyard" is better even if it means getting laughed at.

well, today was better then i ever expected. no walleye, but a few sauger of eating size and dozens of goldeye. here in Manitoba smoked goldeye is a local delicacy, but i hate smoked fish and i don't know of any other way to cook them so i threw them back. weather was great , had a plaid jacket with the sleeves rolled up and i was comfortable all afternoon.

Just got back from a lake near Copper Center Alaska.  Four of us took 24 rainbow trout, from 14-22".  good bite for a while then a front moved in and it died off.

I think that big "WHITE" pile over in the corner of my yard is my "BOAT, or a missing car.  :-D Still got 4 ft of snow in most of the yard. Maybe by may I can get the boat out and go fishing.

here you go.

http://sportfisherman.net/sportfish/fish/goldeye/goldeye.htm

they'r common here, our minor league baseball team is named after them. smoked goldeye is a manitoba delicacy, but i don't really like smoked fish. i've never heard of them mentioned in the states, maybe you guys have a different name. like up hear pickerel often refers to walleye, but an actual pickerel is much like a northern pike

howdy all:

been out a few times in the last 2 weeks. mostly fish for gill, crappie and perch.  i don't own a tip-up and never will.

i been finding gill in bout 8 ft. of water and only bout 4 ft. down. my favorite thing to catch them on is a small (around #16) black spoon with spikes for bait. i would prefer mousies(honeybee larvae) but i have not seen them for sale in a few years.

the gill usually move to shallow water by the end of this month around  here and i enjoy catching them there.  it sure makes it easier.

i usually catch a few crappie right at dark in the same place i find the gills.

                                             luck!
